Men's Lacrosse Drops Ivy Road Matchup at #12 Cornell
4/6/2024 4:53:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell goalie Wyatt Knust stopped 24 shots to lead the 12th-ranked Cornell Big Red (7-3, 3-1 Ivy League) to a 14-8 win over the Brown Bears (1-9, 0-3 Ivy League) Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field.
"I'm pretty proud of our team and their effort," said head coach Mike Daly. "They continue to fight and battle and thought there were a lot of winning plays and moments. Against a good team on the road, we have to sustain that effort and that's on the head coach. We will continue to fight our way out – no other way."
Both goalies were stellar from the start with Connor Theriault (17 saves) recording five saves in the opening frame and Cornell's Knust making nine saves.
Jackson Wolfram scored the game's first goal with 12:33 remaining and Matteo Corsi doubled the Bruno lead with 10:18 remaining. Cornell's Hugh Kelleher cut into the lead with 4:51 remaining in the first to make it 2-1.
After Cornell freshman Ryan Goldstein tied the game with 11:20 remaining, Ben Scandone and Aidan McLane scored consecutive goals with 8:40 and 7:24 remaining in the second to give the Bears a 4-2 lead.
McLane pushed Brown's lead to three with 3:32 remaining in the first half with his 22nd goal of the season.
Cornell's Brendan Staub made it 5-3 Bears with his second goal of the season with five seconds remaining in the half.
Scandone added his second of the game with 11:33 remaining in the third quarter to make it 6-3 Bears. Michael Long and Willem Firth responded with consecutive goals to cut the lead to one with 9:33 remaining.
Trey Taylor struck for his first of the season to make it 7-5 with 8:57 remaining as PJ Behan picked up the assist.
The Big Red answered with five straight goals to take a 10-7 lead, its first lead of the game, to end the third quarter. Goldstein scored twice to cap the hat trick with CJ Kirst, Spencer Wirtheim, and Kelleher adding goals on the run.
Cornell extended the lead to seven with goals from Goldstein, Kirst, Kelleher, and Wertheim to open the fourth quarter.
Spencer Hughes ended the run with 4:44 remaining with his ninth of the season.
