Women's Lacrosse Falls to Harvard in High-Scoring Ivy Opener

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - No. 24 Brown women's lacrosse fell for the first time this season, 18-17, in a high-scoring Ivy League opener at Harvard on Saturday.
In a battle of unbeatens, the Bears (3-1, 0-1 Ivy) led by five goals entering the fourth and were outscored 7-1 in the quarter, while the Crimson (4-0, 1-0 Ivy), who are receiving votes in the top-25 poll, remain undefeated and continue to be one of the top goal-scoring teams in the nation.
Senior Mia Mascone and junior Greta Criqui led the Bears with four goals each, while seniors Nathalie Ahn and Julia Ford, and junior Sydney Rathjen each had two goals. Junior Annie Burton tallied seven assists to lead the team and scored one goal.
Seniors Callie Hem and Riley Campbell led Harvard with five goals each.
Brown got off to a 3-1 start with two goals by Mascone and another by Criqui. After the Crimson evened the score at three, Ford and Ahn each found the back of cage, and Burton closed the first quarter to make it a 6-4 Brown lead after one.
The Bears controlled the second by outscoring Harvard, 7-4. Criqui had three goals in the quarter, while Mascone had two, to give Brown a 13-8 halftime advantage.
Harvard cut the Brown lead to 13-11 with 5:32 left in the third. The Bears responded by scoring the next three goals as seniors Carly Camphausen and Maddie Joyce, and Rathjen upped the lead to 16-11 after three.
The Crimson came roaring back in the fourth to tie and eventually win the game. Harvard scored the first five goals to even the score at 16 with 2:21 left in the game. Ahn then put the Bears ahead with 1:03 to go, but Harvard tied it back up with 25 seconds left, and won with 11 seconds on the clock.
Brown is back at Stevenson-Pincince Field against Bryant at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
