Women's Tennis Defeats UMass to Extend Winning Streak to Five
3/16/2024 6:01:00 PM | Women's Tennis
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Brown women's tennis won its fifth-straight match with a 6-1 victory over UMass on Saturday at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
With the win, the Bears improve to 9-5 on the season and remain unbeaten at home with a 7-0 record.
"Our team continues to raise the bar in their competitiveness and ability to bounce back when things don't go their way at first or when their opponents raise their level," said Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser. "Today's match was another step in the right direction for our team. We started out with clarity in doubles on courts one and two and closed out the doubles point pretty quickly.
"In singles, UMass challenged us on most courts," said Schmidhauser. "Ali played a disciplined match at line two, using her variety and net play to overwhelm her opponent to give us a 2-0 lead. From then on, most matches were closely contested with our players showing great fight and very little negativity as they were able to problem-solve a way to closing out their matches. Gabby played a great match using her speed and variety to defeat a tough opponent in three sets. Phoebe had to battle hard and use her variety to find a way to a hard-fought three-set victory. After Nora won the first set pretty easily, her opponent raised her level in the second set, but Nora adjusted her game plan in the 3rd set and closed out the match with clarity and aggressive play. Anne showed off her ability to step into the court and dictate with precision groundstrokes and much improved net play. She displayed a lot of courage in the closing stages of her match, especially in the third set tiebreaker."
