Women's Lacrosse Hands UMass Lowell its First Loss

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Claire Mahoney saved what would have been a game-tying goal with 45 seconds remaining to lift No. 23 Brown women's lacrosse over UMass Lowell, 15-14, on Saturday afternoon at home.
The Bears improve to 6-2 on the year, while UMass Lowell is knocked from the unbeatens and drops to 8-1.
Senior Mia Mascone once again led Brown with six goals and three assists, breaking into the top 10 all-time in career points with 137. Senior Leah Caputo finished with a hat trick, while junior Annie Burton and senior Julia Ford each had two goals.
After UMass Lowell took an early 2-0 lead, Mascone and Burton evened the score at two. The River Hawks then took a 4-2 advantage before a 6-1 Brown run to close the quarter to put the Bears up 8-5 after the first 15.
Mascone started the second to extend the lead to 9-5. The River Hawks then scored the next seven of eight goals over the next 27 minutes to go back ahead, 12-10, heading to the fourth.
Brown took contro; in the fourth, winning the quarter 5-2. Mascone tied the game at 12 with 9:21 to go on a free position and then went unassisted at 8:40 for the game winner.
Junior Greta Criqui and Ford each found the back of the net to keep the Bears on top, and Mahoney clinched the game with her save with 45 seconds left.
Brown resumes Ivy League play at Columbia on Saturday at 1 p.m.
