AMHERST, Mass. - First-year Head Coach Katrina Dowd wasted no time picking up her first win as the leader of the Brown women's lacrosse program as the Bears defeated No. 22 UMass, 15-14, in the season opener on Saturday in Amherst.
The Bears begin the season 1-0, while the Minutewomen, who were defeated on their home turf for the first time since May of 2022, start the season 0-2 after falling at No. 2 Boston College in their opener. It is the first ranked win for Brown since March of 2020 over then No. 23 Virginia Tech.
Senior Mia Mascone led Brown with five goals and added one assist and two caused turnovers, while seniors Carly Camphausen and Julia Ford, and juniors Greta Criqui and Annie Burton each tallied two goals. Seniors Maddie Joyce and Nathalie Ahn both found the back of the net once. Ahn led the team with three assists.
Sophomore Claire Mahoney finished with eight saves for her first win of the season in goal.
It was a nail-biter throughout as there were a pair of lead changes early and the Bears had an answer for each Minutewomen push. Camphausen, Criqui and Ahn all scored in the first quarter to take a 3-1 advantage with 9:03 on the clock. UMass responded with four-straight goals to close the first and begin the second with a 5-3 advantage at 12:21.
Brown then went on a 6-0 run to close the half and start the third, taking a 9-5 lead. The Bears would never trail again. After going up, 13-9, with 11:51 left in the game, UMass scored five of the next six goals to even the score at 14.
Criqui then sent home the game winner with an assist from Ahn with 2:25 on the clock and Mahoney made a last-second save to seal victory.
