Strong Second Half Leads Men’s Basketball to 71-64 Victory over Penn

PHILADELPHIA – Brown (7-17, 3-6 Ivy) shot 56 percent from the field in a dominating second half to defeat Penn (9-15, 1-8 Ivy) 71-64 on Saturday evening in The Palestra. The win gives the Bears their first series sweep over the Quakers since the 2014-15 season (Feb. 14 and Feb. 27).
Kino Lilly Jr. went 12-of-12 from the line for a team-high 25 points and added four assists. However, his defensive effort late in the contest showed as he soared to block a layup attempt with 1:18 remaining in regulation.
Alexander Lesburt Jr. reached double figures for the second consecutive game with 11 points and added six rebounds, and Kimo Ferrari came off the bench with 11 points and two blocks. Lilly Jr., Lesburt Jr. and Ferrari combined for nine three-pointers.
Nana Owusu-Anane posted eight points and 11 rebounds to go with his four dimes and Malachi Ndur contributed nine points, three boards and three assists.
FIRST HALF
Brown turned away an early Penn lead with an 8-0 run with 8:33 remaining in the first half, capped by Ferrari's three off a Quaker turnover.
Moments later, another Penn lead was squandered as a second chance bucket by Owusu-Anane tied the game at 17-all.
Brown then took control, going on a 10-2 run with just over a minute to play in the stanza. The Bears went into the half with a 31-27 lead behind 12 points from Lilly Jr., and a combined 12 points, two assists and two blocks by seniors Ndur and Ferrari.
SECOND HALF
The surge continued early in the second half, with seven unanswered Brown points forcing a Quaker timeout as the visiting Bears extended their lead to nine.
The defense stymied Penn, holding the home team scoreless for over four minutes, and the lead reached double figures with 2:23 left to play (62-51 Brown).
Brown made clutch free throws late to ice the game and defeat Penn, 71-64.
Clark Slajchert was the game's leading scorer with 32 points.
IVY SEEDINGS
With the win, Brown sits a game away from Columbia and Harvard for the fourth spot in the Ivy standings. The Crimson defeated the Lions tonight and both programs sit at 4-5 in league play with five games remaining for all following this weekend.
NEXT UP
Brown continues the road trip and visits Columbia and Cornell next weekend. Tip-off from NYC is at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23 with the Bears battling the Big Red at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24.
