PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Brown women's basketball team (5-5) fell to the Providence Friars (6-5) 87-81 in overtime on Saturday at Alumni Hall.
First-year guard Gia Powell led Brown in scoring with 20 points, a new season-high for Powell.
Junior guard Grace Arnolie posted her third game in a row with double figures, scoring the second-most points with 12.
Junior forward Alyssa Moreland continued to build upon her season return with seven points and two steals.
"I mean there were some mistakes made that I think we're all thinking about that we want to get back, and I said to the team myself included," Elizabeth F. Turner '98 Coaching Chair for Women's Basketball Monique LeBlanc said. "We have to be tough, and we have to have that next play mentality. It's combining that mentality, but also reviewing what are the things that we can really control better the next time we're in the situation, and then pushing around to a big game on Tuesday night."
The Bears put on a strong performance in the first quarter, posting 17 points to Providence's eight. Senior guard Isabella Mauricio, Gia Powell, and sophomore guard Olivia Young netted three triples for nine of Brown's points. Providence was unable to net any points from beyond the arc in the first quarter.
The Bears forced six turnovers on Providence. Brown capitalized on those opportunities, netting six points off turnovers.
Providence rallied throughout the second quarter, putting up 20 points. Olivia Young hit another three with just a minute remaining before the break, putting the Bears up by three (28-25). The Friars were able to tie things up with the help of a free throw from Olivia Olsen and a jumper from Brynn Farrell.
Brown netted 25 points in the third quarter, with Providence posting 21 points. Scoring alternated between the Bears and Friars throughout the third quarter, with Brown finishing out the quarter with the upperhand.
The Bears held on to the lead until the halfway mark of the fourth quarter. Providence's Marta Morales hit a three, giving the Friars a one point edge over Brown. Grace Efosa would extend the Friars' lead to three points with a jump shot. Gia Powell would cut their lead with a three. The teams would tie twice more before Providence took the lead with a minute and a half to go in regulation.
A foul by Providence's Emily Archibald allowed the Bears to earn two points at the free throw line, and tie the game up with just 30 seconds left in regulation.
Providence ultimately came out on top after netting 15 points in overtime.
