12/6/2024 11:08:00 AM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field
The Brown track and field programs will begin their indoor season at multiple meets this weekend. Multi athletes will compete at URI on Thursday and Friday, while distance runners will take their talents to Boston for the Boston University Season Opener. All remaining athletes will compete on their home track as Brown will also host the 38th annual Alden Invitational, beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 7.
JUMPS
The jumpers for the Bears women’s team include Brown’s most successful athlete from a season ago, senior Jada Joseph. Joseph was an Honorable Mention All-American triple jumper after finishing 22nd at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2024. Senior Rudecia Bernard was the best high jumper for the women last year, winning a league championship at Ivy League Indoor Heps and eventually earning 14th at the NCAA Outdoor East Regionals. Sophomore Rosie Volpintesta is expected to take a step forward this season after finishing sixth in the Pentathlon at Ivy League Indoor Heps. Junior Simone Dunbar is another name to look out for with this group, as she’ll compete in the women’s long jump again this season.
The men’s jumpers include junior Frank Monahan-Morang, who finished sixth at the Outdoor Heps, with sophomore Mubaraq Aderogba finishing in 10th at the same event. Both are poised to take a step forward this year, according to head coach Ken Hunt.
Among the rest of the Bears jumpers are youthful athletes with plenty of potential that coach Ken Hunt believes are extremely talented and have a lot to prove this season.
THROWS
Brown brings back a plethora of experience in the weight throw, including senior Chidinma Agbasi, who set the school record in weight last season (19.54m). Senior Sophia Gallucci returns from injury after not competing in indoor competitions last season. Sophomore Jillian Leahy was eighth in the weight throw at Ivy League Indoor Heps for the women, and sophomore Keith Daigneau was 12th for the men. Sophomore Zoe Carter-Konate and first-year Giana DeCesare will also compete for the women.
Throwing coach Darcy Wilson hopes the team will improve in shot put this season, saying that the team’s worked hard in training. Sophomores Karon Johnson and Michelyn Appiah will aim to achieve that goal. Johnson was 13th at Ivy League Indoor Heps for the men’s competition while Appiah was 17th in the women’s competition.
DISTANCE/MIDDLE DISTANCE
Coming off a successful cross country season, the Bears distance runners have high hopes for the upcoming indoor track and field season. There’s an equal blend of youth and veteran leaders on the men’s and women’s squad.
For the women, junior Jenna Lowrey and sophomore Tanisha Patil competed in the Ivy League Indoor Heps final race last season, earning fourth and eighth places, respectively. Scarlet Stimson nearly made the 800m final with a ninth place finish and juniors Julia Schriefer (1000m) and Nimrit Ahuja (3000m) had strong showings in their respective races at Ivy League Indoor Heps. Sophomore Olivia Fraga and first-year Morgan Boonshaft are coming off stellar cross country seasons as well.
On the men’s side, two returners competed at Ivy League Indoor Heps last season including sophomore Aaron Caveney who earned 15th in the 500m and sophomore Matthew Doherty finished 13th in the 1000m race.
SPRINTERS/HURDLERS
The Bears sprinters are a promising young group for the men and women as both teams return several key contributors from last season.
The women’s side returns sophomore Alyssa Jackson who finished 15th in the 60m and 23rd in the 200m at Ivy League Indoor Heps a season ago. All four of the 4x440 sprinters will return including Jackson, Maddelynn Brooks, Elle Riley and Jenna Lowrey. Juniors Makaya Fofana and Simone Dunbar return after top 10 finishes at Ivy League Indoor Heps last year.
The men’s returning sprinters include junior Elias Archie, who finished fifth in the 60m at Ivy League Indoor Heps last season and senior Daniel Sarisky who finished 10th in the 200m. Junior Jason Estrada was third in the 400m finals at Ivy League Indoor Heps and was a part of the 4x440 team that finished fourth. Estrada and Sarisky are the two returners from that relay team.
