Men’s Basketball Captures Sixth Consecutive Win With Double Overtime Victory Over Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown men's basketball team (7-3) picked up an 84-80 double overtime victory over Rhode Island (9-1) on Tuesday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
"That's a huge win for our program," Head Men's Basketball Coaching Chair Mike Martin '04 said. "I want to thank our students, all of our fans, it really helped give us a home court advantage. I thought they were great. We weren't great early, I thought we didn't play like the team that we've been playing like, maybe we found it at the end of the second half."
Rhode Island led by as much as 12 in the opening 20 minutes as they controlled the game on the boards, the Rams out-rebounded the Bears 23-12 in the opening half.

The bright spot for the Bears in the first half was Aaron Cooley, Cooley led all Bears with 12 first half points on 4-7 shooting from the floor.
Rhode Island held a 39-27 lead with 2:09 remaining in the first half, Brown closed the opening half on a 6-0 run, giving them momentum entering the second half.
Brown earned its first lead of the game with 6:19 remaining in the second half as Aaron Cooley launched a three-pointer, Cooley's triple gave the Bears a 58-56 lead. The two in-state rivals exchanged baskets for the final 6:19, as the game headed to overtime knotted at 65.
At the end of the first overtime session, the Rams had a chance to win the game as Sebastian Thomas launched a three-pointer, his shot was off the mark as the game headed to a second overtime tied at 71.
Trailing 72-71 with 3:56 remaining in the second overtime, Kino Lilly Jr.'s driving layup gave the Bears a 73-72 advantage. Landon Lewis pushed the Brown lead to 75-72 lead with a layup 32 seconds later.
After a Rhode Island basket, Aaron Cooley nailed a three-pointer giving Brown a 78-74 lead, a lead they would not relinquish.
Kino Lilly Jr. finished with a game-high 23 points, it is the third consecutive game Lilly Jr. has scored 23 points. The senior also matched a career-high with 10 assists, Lilly Jr. also moved to fourth all-time in program history in points scored.
Aaron Cooley netted a career-high 19 points on 6-11 shooting from the floor, Landon Lewis continued his hot start to the season with his 10th double-digit scoring effort of the season as he finished with 15 points.
As a team, the Bears finished with 20 assists, 15 steals, and 11 blocked shots.
"To hold Rhode Island to 26 second half points, 15 combined points in the two overtime sessions, to hold a team like that to 41 points in 30 minutes of play, its terrific defense. I thought our guards wore them down."
Brown will be back in action on Sunday, Dec. 22 when they travel to Lawrence, Kan. to take on Kansas, tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Allen Field House on ESPN.
