ALBANY, N.Y. - The Brown men's basketball team suffered a 72-71 to open its season at Siena on Monday evening.
"Some good moments but not consistent enough with our plan and execution, too many offensive rebounds surrendered, too many turnovers, and too many fouls," Head Men's Basketball Coaching Chair Mike Martin '04 said. "We've gotta be way more disciplined in terms of not fouling and not giving up second chance points. We found it at the 10-minute mark of the second half and we made a good run to get back and take the lead but we weren't consistent enough, we'll learn from it and we'll get better."
The Saints opened the game on a 15-5 run through the first 4:48 of the first half, after Martin '04 called timeout, the Bears launched an 11-0 run to take an 18-15 lead. The run was sparked by Kino Lilly Jr., who had seven of the 13 points during the run.
The Bears led by as much as five in the opening 20 minutes, they took a 34-32 lead into the second half. Brown shot 5-9 from three-point range in the opening 20 minutes as Lilly Jr. shot 3-4 from beyond the arc. Brown outscored Siena 18-10 in the paint in the first half.
In the second half, Siena opened up a 48-40 lead with 9:53 remaining in regulation, the Bears launched a 10-2 run to tie the game at 50. Aaron Cooley produced eight of the 10 Brown points during the run.
Brown held a 64-61 lead on the final possession of regulation before Brendan Coyle was fouled while attempting a three-pointer, Coyle made all three free throws to force overtime.
Trailing 72-68, Lilly Jr. nailed a three-pointer to cut the Siena lead to one. After two missed free throws at the other end, LIlly Jr. had a chance to win the game for Brown but his shot didn't connect.
Aaron Cooley matched his career-high with 15 points on 7-15 shooting from the floor, the senior grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds in the contest. Kino Lilly Jr. netted four three-pointers in the contest, he sits 13 three-pointers made away from the program record.
