Brown Wrestling Team Kicks Off 2024-25 Season at Princeton Open

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Brown men's wrestling team started their season on Sunday by competing at the Princeton Open. The Bears had wrestlers in seven different weight classes in action at the tournament.
Jacob Joyce (133 lb) was the headliner of the day for Brown, defeating Brandon Chletsos (Rutgers) in a 2-0 decision and Conor Collins (West Point) by a 3-0 default (3:00). Joyce advanced to the semifinal round before dropping a hard fought match to Anthony Noto (Lock Haven) in a 6-1 decision. Joyce won the third place match against Gauge Shipp (Hofstra) by fall (0:19).
In the 141 pound weight class, Austin McBurney (Brown) defeated Anthony Viscido (Rider) by technical fall 17-2 (3:22). At 149 pounds, Sam McMonagle (Brown) defeated Cooper Hornack (Columbia) in a 5-0 decision and Ethan Mojena (Brown) picked up a victory over Cole Cifrodelli (Rider) in a technical fall 19-3 (5:53).
Nico Romero (Brown) scored his first win of the season by defeating Yanni Vines (Columbia) in a 12-6 decision.
In the consolation brackets, Iamunno defeated Anthony Viscido (Rider) by a technical fall 17-0 (4:04). Ethan Mojena picked up wins against Tyler Vazquez (Princeton) in a 4-1 decision and Matt Hoelke (Rider) in a 4-2 decision. Andrew Reall beat Anthony Moscatello (Princeton) in a 15-9 decision. Alex Hamrick picked up a win against Ike Schmidt (Columbia) in a 7-4 decision.
Alex Semenenko dominated by picking up four wins, beating Vincent Mueller (Columbia) in a 5-2 decision, Collin French (Rider) in a 14-2 major decision, Calvin Lachman (Lehigh) in a 2-1 decision, and Bill McChesney (Columbia) in a 4-1 decision. Braden Ewing got a victory over Danny Church (Hofstra) in a fall 3-0 (1:51).Â
"Overall, I was pleased with the way our guys competed. Each one of them came away with at least one win, and we had a couple especially strong performances from Jacob Joyce and Alex Semenenko. We plan to roll out a more complete picture of our lineup at the Big Red Invitational coming up at the end of the month," said Head Coach Jordan Leen.

The Bears next meet is Sunday, Novemeber 24 at 8 am as they travel to Ithaca, N.Y. to compete in the Big Red Invitational at Cornell.
