Field Hockey Beats Penn 4-3, Clinches Ivy League Tournament
11/2/2024 3:54:00 PM | Field Hockey
This win over the Quakers is the first Brown win in the series since 2010. With four conference wins this season going 4-3, the 2024 Bears record the most Ivy wins since going 5-2 in 2005.
"I'm really proud of this team and our accomplishment, not only did we do this for ourselves but for all of Brown Field Hockey and the Brown community," said senior vice-captain Julia Hitti. "It's really exciting to be a part of the first Brown Field Hockey team to ever make the Ivy League Tournament."
The Bears enter the Ivy League Tournament as No. 3 seed.
"I'm just super proud of this team," said Head Coach Britt Broady. "I think we had a great battle on our hands, Penn played very very well. Every Ivy game it's been tight for Penn all season long so we knew this was going to be a hard match, but we had a goal in mind when we started and we stuck to it and made it happen."
Under two and a half minutes into the game, Lucy Adams was awarded a penalty stroke following a review. Her shot was successful as she recorded the first goal of the game.
The Quakers responded 34 seconds later as Livia Loozen recorded a goal. She was assisted by Courtney Kenah and Philine Klas
Penn Riley Thomson recorded the lone goal in the second. She was assisted by Kylie Wall.
At the end of the first half, Brown trailed behind Penn who led 2-1.
"On the field before we all came together, the people who were starting the half, and we were like 'we're gonna make something happen in these first couple minutes', and I think we really followed through with that," said Julia Hitti. "We're a very collaborative team and we tell each other what we need from each other, that was really helpful."
With less than three minutes remaining in the third, Kiersten Smith tallied a goal. Smith tipped a shot that came in from Adams; Adams was credited with the assist.
Just 1:24 into the fourth quarter, Mia Karine Myklebust recorded a goal tipping a shot that came from McCallum; McCallum and Juliette Meijaard were credited with assists.
With 10:29 left in regulation, McCallum recorded her first goal of the afternoon and eighth of her career; the goal was unassisted.
Penn earned a penalty stroke with just over one minute remaining; Amy Lanouette recorded a goal.
The Bears had two goals that were recalled.
The Bears will head to Princeton next weekend as they appear in their first Ivy League Tournament.
