Volleyball Comes Back for Five Set Win at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. – Brown volleyball (10-13, 7-6 Ivy) stayed in the race for a spot in the Ivy League Tournament with a five-set comeback win over Cornell (13-8, 7-6 Ivy) on Friday night.
With the win, the Bears are now tied with Cornell for the third-best record in the Ivy League. The two teams are a game ahead of Penn entering the final night of the Ivy League schedule on Saturday.
Mariia Sidorova led Brown with 16 kills and Kayla Griebl had 15. Hannah Flannery was third on the team with nine kills. Julia Kakkis guided Brown's offense with 43 assists and added 10 digs for a double-double.
On defense, Brown had four players collect double-figure digs with Victoria Vo leading the way with 13. Jessie Golden and Sidorova each had 12, followed by Kakkis. At the net, Sophia Wolfson had a team-high three blocks.
Brown began the night jumping out to an 8-4 lead in the first set but Cornell fought back to take a 17-14 lead after a 5-1 run. Down 21-18, Brown scored five-straight points with the run finished by kills from Sidorova and Griebl to go up 23-21. Up by one, a kill from Griebl ended the first set for the Bears, 25-23.
Cornell took the next two sets, 25-11 and 25-16 to put the Bears' backs against the wall.
The teams traded runs in the set four with Cornell taking a 16-15 lead. Two aces by Sidorova and two kills from Griebl gave Brown a 5-0 run to put the Bears up 20-16. The teams traded points to end the set with Sidorova forcing a fifth set with a kill.
Brown went down 4-1 early in the final set but fought back after three-straight kills by Sidorova to take a 6-5 lead. Tied 8-8, a kill by Griebl and ace from Kakkis, followed by a Cornell error made the score 11-8. The Big Red got within one at 12-11, but Sidorova responded with a kill. After an error, an ace by Golden gave the Bears the win.

Brown will head to Columbia to finish the regular season with a match against the Lions on Saturday. A win over Columbia will clinch a spot in the Ivy League Tournament for the Bears.
