Football Welcomes Bryant for In-State Showdown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – One of just two Ivy League teams to start 2-0 this season, the Brown football team will welcome in-state rival Bryant to Richard Gouse Field at Brown Stadium for a non-league matchup this Saturday. Kickoff is set for noon on ESPN+.

OPENING KICKOFF
- Brown is coming off a thrilling 31-28 victory over Harvard last Saturday, scoring the game-winning touchdown with 21 seconds left in regulation, taking their first and only lead of the game.
- Bryant (1-3, 0-1 CAA) had two weeks to prepare for the Bears, coming off a bye week last week.
SERIES HISTORY
- Brown leads the all-time series 6-2.
- Seven of the eight games in the series have been decided by one possession, with Brown winning the last two years: 44-38 in double overtime in 2022 and rallying for a 29-25 last-second win last season in Smithfield.
RECEIVING VOTES
- Brown is receiving votes in both the Stats Perform FCS and AFCA FCS Coaches Polls this week.
- It is the first time the Bears are receiving votes since the 2008 season.
- Brown's highest national ranking (No. 15) came in the final poll of the 2005 season.
WEEKLY HONORS
- QB Jake Willcox was named the Gold Helmet recipient this week from the New England Football Writers after leading the Bears in rushing with 57 yards and was 21-for-37 for 288 yards and three touchdowns through the air.
- Defensive back Elias Archie was named the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week after coming away with a huge interception near the end of the first half, which set up a Brown touchdown to turn the momentum of the game.
- Running back Matt Childs was named the league's Rookie of the Week after posting 101 receiving yards on four catches including a 75-yard score and rushing for 14 yards on four carries.
FIGHTING TIL THE END
- Brown's last-minute rally over Harvard is the latest in a line of comeback victories over the last two seasons, marking the fourth time in the last six wins Brown came from behind in the fourth quarter.
- Brown has scored in the final minute to win three times in the last two seasons (2024-Harvard; 2023- Bryant and Princeton).
QUICK STRIKES
- Three of Brown's seven touchdowns this season have come on plays of at least 45 yards or more, including an 87-yard pass to Solomon Miller on the first play of the season, and a 75-yarder to Matt Childs.
GENERATING TURNOVERS
- Brown's average turnover margin per game in 2024 is +2.00, good for second in the nation behind Nicholls (2.50).
- Brown leads the Ivy League with three interceptions through the first two games.
- Brown compiled nine pass breakups on Sept. 21 at Georgetown.
- As a team, Brown finished with 13 interceptions last season, tied with Harvard for the most in the Ivy League.
PUTTING ON THE PRESSURE
- Brown's defense compiled 4.0 sacks and 10 tackles-for-loss at Georgetown.
- It was the most sacks in a game since compiling 6.0 against Columbia on 11/18/2017. Brown previously had 7.0 in the 2017 opener against Bryant.
- The 10.0 TFLs was just the second time since 2017 Brown had double-digit TFLs in a game (2023 vs. Princeton).
CLIMBING THE LADDER
- Last week, Jake Willcox (500) moved into fifth place on the school's all-time career completions list.
- Next up is Kyle Newhall-Caballero (517) and Jason McCollough who sits in third place with 520.
- Willcox also moved into fifth place all-time last week for career touchdown passes (36). He needs four more to pass Kyle Newhall-Caballero for fourth place all-time (39).
- Isaiah Reed is just five pass breakups away from tying for second place on the school's all-time career list.
ALTERNATING RESULTS
- Brown has alternated wins and losses over the last 13 games dating back to the season finale in 2022, never having won or lost consecutive games over that stretch.
POLARIZING COVERAGE
- Brown's punt and kickoff coverages this season rank on opposite ends of the Ivy League.
- Brown ranks No. 6 nationally and No. 1 in the Ivy League by allowing just 13.50 yards per kickoff return.
- On punt coverages, Brown ranks 70th nationally by allowing 10.0 yards per return.
- In 2023, the Bears ranked No. 1 in the Ivy League (32nd nationally) on punt coverage, allowing just 5.14 yards per return. On kickoffs, Brown allowed a league-high 24.80 yards (120th out of 122 nationally).
