Volleyball Shines With Sweep Over Columbia

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown volleyball (4-10, 1-3 Ivy) found its rhythm in a sweep over Columbia (3-10, 0-4 Ivy) on Friday night. The Bears beat the Lions 25-13, 25-15, 25-12 as Brown's offense had its best match in the last seven matches.
The Bears hit .392 on the night, the second-best performance of the season, finishing with just seven errors on 79 attacks. Sophia Wolfson had a career-high 10 kills and hit .692, the highest percentage of any Bear this season with at least five attacks.
Beau Vanderlaan, Maria Sidorova and Julia Kakkis each finished second on the team with six kills. Vanderlaan hit .600 and Kakkis hit .500 on the night. Kakkis guided Brown's offense with 24 assists and was also second on the team with eight digs.
On defense, Sophia Treder led Brown's back line with a career-best nine digs and Jessie Golden and Sidorova were tied with Kakkis with eight digs. At the net, Vanderlaan had six blocks, followed by four for Sidorova and three for Wolfson. Brown held the Lions to .000 hitting, the lowest percentage of an opponent this season.
Kayla Griebl finished the night with a career-high five service aces.
Brown hit .381 in the first set and quickly jumped out to a 13-5 lead after an 8-1 run. Kills by Sidorova and Vanderlaan made the score 18-8 and back-to-back aces by Griebl put Brown up 22-11. Kills by Wolfson and Vanderlaan helped Brown close out the set on a 3-0 run.
Two kills by Kakkis bookended a 6-0 run that put Brown up 7-2 early in the second and the Bears found themselves up 11-3 after two blocks. Columbia pulled back within four at 16-12 but two kills from Griebl helped Brown score the next four points to make it 20-12. The Bears used another 4-0 run for set point before a Columbia service error ended the set.
Ann 8-1 run after the Lions cut Brown's lead to three gave Brown control of the third with a 20-10 lead. Wolfson picked up back-to-back kills to make it 23-11 and a kill by Griebl and error from Columbia gave the Bears the victory.
