CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The strong start that gave the Bears a double-digit lead highlighted Brown's (5-12, 1-1 Ivy) 74-72 victory over Harvard (9-6, 0-2 Ivy) on Monday afternoon at Lavietes Pavilion.
The defense shined as Harvard began 1-of-15 from deep and finished 3-of-19 from three-point range, while the Bears drained eight from long distance, led by Kino Lilly Jr.'s four.
Lilly Jr. finished with 19 points – 12 from deep – and tied Rick Lloyd for fifth in program history with 201 career three-pointers. Felix Kloman was 3-of-5 from deep for 11 points, tying his career-high for threes made (at USC). Nana Owusu-Anane collected 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting, nine rebounds, three blocks, and two steals, and Aaron Cooley added three blocks.
"I thought our team played an outstanding half of basketball to build the lead," said head coach Mike Martin '04. "We made enough plays in the second half to hold off Harvard's run. We had outstanding contributions from our bench. We can learn a lot from this game and we will, but we are thrilled with the win."
FIRST HALF
Harvard jumped out to a lead but Brown settled down and soared to a 31-17 edge with 6:16 to go as the defense swarmed the Crimson. The Bears were plus-10 in rebounding en route to a 41-24 lead at the half, limiting Harvard to 36 percent shooting.
Lilly Jr. posted 11 points, three assists and two steals and Owusu-Anane filled up the stat sheet with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting, six rebounds, two blocks, and two assists.
Kalu Anya went 3-of-4 and Kloman drained two triples as the senior returned to the starting lineup for the Bears.
SECOND HALF
Harvard went on a mini-run to begin the second but Malachi Ndur and Anya scored back-to-back baskets to extend the Brown lead back into double figures.
Moments later, consecutive three-pointers by Kloman and Lilly Jr. made it 55-38 Bears (12:11) as the hot shooting from long distance continued.
The Crimson rally fell short as Brown took the first of two regular-season meetings by a 74-72 score.
