PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown softball's Leah Carey has been announced as the Ivy League representative for the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Carey, a junior from Ladera Ranch, Calif., is one of 32 student-athletes selected to serve on the national committee. The National committee is comprised of one student-athlete from each of the 32 Division I conferences.
"By serving on NCAA Division I SAAC, it provides me with the opportunity to advocate for minority groups which is a goal I had in mind when I applied for this role," said Carey. "As I wrote my application, I highlighted how I am a part of the LGBTQ+ community which has allowed me to gain the confidence and willingness to even consider a role such as this one. It is special to me to know that I have been selected into this role with my authentic goals to spread more inclusivity throughout DI athletics. Moving forward, I am excited to bring my perspective to these meetings and to continue to focus on representing groups that need a voice within this platform."
Prior to being selected to serve as the Ivy League rep for the National SAAC, Carey served as Brown's representative for the Ivy League SAAC and was on the executive board for Brown SAAC.
Recently, Carey was able to speak on the panel at the Mental Health Summit to share her mental health journey as a student-athlete at the Ivy League Meetings.
The mission of the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is to enhance the total student-athlete experience by protecting student-athlete well-being, fostering a positive student-athlete image and inclusive student-athlete environment, and promoting student-athlete engagement at the national, conference and local levels.
