PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's soccer team fell to Providence 1-0 Thursday evening.

The Bears (2-1) and Friars (4-0) competed for 90 minutes in an evenly matched contest that saw total shots (12-8), shots on goal (4-3), and corners (7-6) all slightly favor the home team.

The teams physical first half that never saw either side maintain control of the game for extended periods of time.

The Friars' Gillian Kenney had the best chance of the opening half for the home team in the 31st minute, sending a shot from just outside the 18-yard box curling towards the bottom left corner of the net, but Clare Gagne, at full extension, was able to get one fist to it to punch it away.

Brown would respond with the best chance of its own, earning a corner in the 41st minute. Evelyn Calhoon sent a high ball into the box, Brittany Raphino got her head to it, but the Friar goalie was able to make the save.

The Bears sent a dangerous cross into the box in the dying seconds of the first half that both Calhoon and Raphino nearly got to, but it was just out of both of their reach.

After a good look on goal to start the second half for Joy Okonye, the Friars would break through on the opposite end.

In the 68th minute, a low cross from the right side of the 18 found the head of Providence's Kayla Briggs who bounced one into the back of the net.

The Bears would attempt to respond just five minutes later when Naya Cardoza found herself with the ball inside the Friars' box to the keeper's left following a deflection. She attempted to bury a hard, low shot back across the face of goal into the opposite corner, but Providence's keeper got her leg to it to keep Brown off the board.

In the 77th minute, the Bears found themselves on the counter attack. Raphino was one-on-one to the left of goal, beat her defender to get a shot off from the middle of the box, but it sailed just wide right.

Brown's final chance to tie the game came in the 89th minute. Okonye fought for a 50-50 ball inside the box when a foul was called, but it went against the Bears, eliminated a would-be scoring opportunity.

On the evening, Raphino, Okonye, and Miya Grant-Clavijo all had two shots apiece. In goal for the Bears, Gagne made three saves.

Brown will have a chance to bounce back this Sunday, Sept. 3 when they welcome UC San Diego to Stevenson-Pincince Field for an 11 a.m. matchup. It will be the first of five straight home games for the Bears.
