PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Jordan Leen, the Marvin Wilenzik '56 Head Coaching Chair for Brown Wrestling has announced the addition of Ty Walz to the coaching staff. Walz joins Brown after a decorated career at Virginia Tech as both a wrestler and assistant coach.
"The more I learned about Brown University the clearer it became that this would be a tremendous opportunity for my family and I," said Walz. "The program's success is inevitable with the support they receive from the administration, strong alumni, and of course the tremendous staff already in place. Coach Leen has already laid significant groundwork and I'm humbled to take part in leading young men to their goals on and off the wrestling mat for such a prestigious university. I can't wait to get started and share with my wife and daughter how incredible Providence and Brown are."
Â
Walz spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech. In his first season on the bench, Walz helped lead the Hokies to their second straight ACC title and their sixth consecutive top 10Â finish at the NCAA Championships. His individual work in the wrestling room helped Jared Haught on his run to the NCAA finals at 197 pounds.
"We are thrilled to announce the addition of Ty to our staff," said Leen. "He has been a part of elite level teams during all the stages of his highly accomplished competitive and coaching careers. He has a personality that people gravitate towards and possesses a humility and authenticity that will make him a strong leader for our student athletes as well as a valuable team member on our staff. He is eager to grow with our program. We can't for him to arrive on College Hill."
Â
As a resident athlete with the Southeast Regional Training Center, Walz won a bronze medal at the U23 World Championships in Poland in 2017. He was the second Virginia Tech wrestler to make a World Team and win a medal in international competition. Walz has won gold medals at the 2018 Bill Farrell Memorial Open and the 2019 Dave Schultz Memorial International and also claimed a silver medal at the 2018 Cerro Pelado in Cuba.
Â
Walz was the 2017 ACC Champion at heavyweight and was a three-time All-American for the Hokies from 2015-17, placing seventh once and fourth twice. At the time of his graduation, Walz's 109 career wins ranked 10th in program history and his .784 career winning percentage tied for 11th.
