PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown head gymnastics coach Brittany Harris has announced the hiring of Sophia Hyderally as the program's new assistant coach. A former NCAA Regional qualifier, Hyderally comes to College Hill after most recently serving as an assistant coach at Temple, Nebraska, and the club level.
"I am incredibly excited to have Sophia join my staff here at Brown," said Harris. "It was clear through the interview process that her goals for Brown Gymnastics aligned with my vision for the program. In addition to her humanistic coaching style, she brings a great deal of energy and passion for the sport of gymnastics and for the student-athlete experience, which makes her an extremely valuable addition to our staff. I am looking forward to working together to help build a culture of excellence and fun for our student-athletes. Welcome to the family, Sophia!"
As an assistant coach at Temple in 2023, Hyderally served as the Owls' choreographer and lead coach on vault and floor, in addition to supervising social media and marketing for the program and assisting with recruiting. Under her direction, the team broke the program records on both vault (49.250) and floor (49.400) and helped put up two of the top four team scores in program history. She also coached two floor athletes to qualifying spots in the NCAA Regionals.
As a volunteer assistant at Nebraska for the 2021 and 2022 seasons, Hyderally assisted on all four events as well as floor and beam choreography. She coached three Huskers to All-Big Ten honors and eight gymnasts to qualify for NCAA Regionals. While in Nebraska, she also coached gymnasts at levels 3-9 at the Nebraska School of Gymnastics and Lincoln Elite Gymnastics.
As a collegiate student-athlete at Alaska-Anchorage, Hyderally broke six school records during her junior season in 2019, earned First Team All-MPSF accolades on beam and floor, won the conference title on beam, and qualified for the NCAA Corvallis Regional on beam where she tied for fourth overall out of 56 gymnasts. As a senior in 2020, she set the program's bars record (9.795) and earned First Team All-MPSF honors on bars and beam. She was in position to qualify for NCAA Regionals on beam once again before the cancellation of the season due to the pandemic.
Hyderally graduated from Alaska-Anchorage in 2020 with a bachelor's degree in international studies and a minor in sociology. She was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, from whom she served as vice president.
The 2024 season will commence in January, with Brown's full schedule to be announced this fall.
The Bears are coming off another successful 2023 campaign that saw the team post its highest-ever National Qualifying Score of 194.315 to qualify for the USAG National Team Semifinals. Brown gymnasts achieved a total of five USAG First Team All-America honors, 19 All-GEC honors and eight All-Ivy honors. The Bears also posted two of the top five scores in program history, and Julia Bedell was named the GEC Co-Specialist of the Year and captured the USAG national title on floor.
