Men's Crew Impresses on Day One of IRA Championship
6/2/2023 7:00:00 PM | Men's Crew
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - Brown's First Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8 and Third Varsity 8 all advanced to the A/B semifinals after the first day of the 2023 IRA Championship on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J. on Friday.
The Bears' 1V8 finished second in its morning heat, while the Second Varsity 8 raced to first place, and the Third Varsity 8 was second for each boat to move on to the top semifinal on Saturday.
Bruno's First Varsity 4 boat crossed the finish line in ninth and will move directly to the B final on Saturday due to inclement canceling the remaining Friday races.
"The team got off to a good start and the eights have all qualified for the A/B semi finals, which puts us among the top crews in the country," said Head Coach Paul Cooke. "We have had a good three week preparation for the IRA and this is a great opportunity for us to peak at the right time. It's important that we just focus on the task at hand."
In Brown's first race of the day, the 1V8 placed second with a time of 5:33.598, just over one second behind first-place Cal (5:32.200) and ahead of third-place Dartmouth (5:33.598). The Bears got off to a fast start with Cal and Dartmouth and separated themselves from the Big Green as the race continued. The Golden Bears were three seconds faster than Brown after the first 500 meters, but Bruno pushed to close the gap with the top team in the nation and make it a close race in the end.
Winning by over four seconds was the 2V8 with a time of 5:45.800, beating a pair of Ivy League teams in second-place Princeton (5:50.676) and Penn (5:58.692). The Bears and Quakers were side-by-side for the first 1500 meters of the race until Brown broke away in the final 500 to leave no doubt for the victory.
Also finishing second was the 3V8, racing to a time of 5:51.950, two seconds behind first-place Cal (5:49.404) and seven seconds in front of third-place Penn (5:58.458). The crew started strong and stayed in second throughout, holding off the Quakers and Boston University.
