
Women's Rugby Posts Runner-Up Finish at Crimson 7s

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Brown Bears took three wins to advance to the Championship Game in the Crimson 7s Tournament on Sunday, eventually falling to host Harvard in the final.
'The squad improved each and every match and plays with so much passion and heart," said Kathleen Flores Head Women's Rugby Coach Rosalind Chou. "We are so proud of everyone and it was a valiant effort until the final whistle. We will enjoy a well-earned spring break and will get right back to preparing for Vassar.
"Julia Murray is really stepping up. She's cool under pressure and her kicking ability is really an asset to the squad."
Brown opened the Crimson 7s Tournament with a 31-0 win over Northeastern with Akilah Cathey and Nikki Lynch both recording a pair of tries. Murray chipped in three conversions in the win and Jania Vandevoorde added a try of her own.
The Bears improved to 2-0 in the tournament with a 17-12 win over Sacred Heart. After falling behind 7-0, Lynch and Cathey recorded tries to put the Bears ahead and Morgan Cunningham made is 17-7 in favor of the Bears before a final try from the Pioneers.
In the semifinal against Quinnipiac, the Bears and Bobcats traded tries and conversions to a 14-14 tie with a few minutes remaining. Cathey's fourth try of the day broke the deadlock and Murray's conversion pushed the score to 21-14.
With the three wins, Brown secured a spot in the Crimson 7s Championship against host Harvard. Lynch touched down with a Murray conversion to make it 7-0 Bears before a pair of Harvard scores gave the home team the championship.
Brown hosts Vassar College on Saturday (Apr. 8) at Richard Gouse Field at Brown Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
