PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's tennis saw its five-match winning streak come to an end against Boston University, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
Â
The Bears fall to 11-4 on the year, while the Terriers advance to 10-4.
Â
Doubles stayed unbeaten for Brown. The 63rd ranked duo of sophomore Addison Ahlstrom and senior Britany Lau won a tiebreaker for a tough victory at first doubles (77-65). Freshman Phoebe Peus and sophomore Lindsey Hofflander took third doubles (6-4) to secure the first point of the match.
Â
The Terriers quickly took a 2-1 match lead with wins at third and fourth singles. Junior Ali Benedetto then won her match at first singles (7-5, 6-2) to even things up. BU snagged a hard-fought win at second singles and Hofflander made it a 3-3 tie after winning sixth singles (6-4, 6-3). Fifth singles then went to the Terriers, resulting in Brown's second home loss of the year.
"Today's match was such a battle that unfortunately didn't go our way," said Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser. "We continued our 15-0 streak of winning the doubles point; Phoebe and Lindsey stayed tough throughout their match and made some crucial adjustments to win their match 6-4. Britany and Adi kept competing and came up with some great plays when it counted the most, including saving a match point. Ali Benedetto came out firing at line one singles, relentlessly coming to the net and overwhelming her opponent with aggressive play. Lindsey Hofflander continues to play smart, aggressive tennis and I am very pleased with her improved use of strategy. Also, she has also made huge strides mentally as a competitor."
"We have work to do to get ready for the next part of our season. We will be facing a lot of quality teams over the next five weeks and I look forward to seeing how our team responds to the challenges ahead of them."
