PRINCETON, N.J. – The Brown women's tennis team (5-2) fell to third-seeded Columbia (4-2) 4-1 on the last day of the ECAC Championship, finishing fourth in the competition.
"Another extremely competitive match for our team that came down to a few points," Broadbent Family Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser said.
Doubles began with Abigail Lee and Chloe Qin on the second line, falling 6-3 to Gayathri Krishnan and Sabrina Lin. Simultaneously, on the first line, Dani Ben-Abraham and Hannah Shen clinched a tight tie breaking win over Malak El Allami and Amber Yin, 7(7)-6(4). With the doubles point tied at one match each, the deciding third line saw Ali Maguy and Anne Yang narrowly lose 7-5 to Emily Baek and Sophia Wang.
"We had a much better performance in doubles today, and even though we didn't get the point in the end, there are some positives to take away from our team's performance. Hannah and Dani beat a quality team at line 1 and showed a lot of progress as a team," Schmidhauser said.
In singles, Ali Maguy fell to Gayathri Krishnan at the first line, 6-2 and 6-2. At the fourth line, Abigail Lee snapped her losing streak, 6-3 and 6-2, defeating Emily Baek. Sari Woo fell to Michelle Li at the sixth line, 6-3 and 6-3. Hannah Shen powered through her match, but fell to Malak El Allami at the second line, 0-6, 6-0, and 3-6. The matches between Dani Ben-Abraham Sophia Wang, and Anne Yang and Margaret Hui did not finish. Ben-Abraham and Wang's match at the third line ended at 7-5 and 1-3. Yang and Hui's match at the fifth line ended at 4-6 and 5-3.
"In singles, Abbey played a strategically solid match, moving her opponent with precision and coming to the net relentlessly, overwhelming her opponent. Hannah played a flawless first set against her opponent, and even though she couldn't sustain the level necessary to beat her opponent, she should be proud of her overall performance in this event. Dani and Annie battled hard on their respective courts, showing a lot of fight and problem-solving skills," Schmidhauser said.
"Overall, a solid performance for our team as we continue to face tough competition in the next week against No. 25 Baylor and BC. We will continue to work hard when we return home and keep raising our level of competitiveness."
