Ury Breaks Program Hurdles Record as Bears Sweep Brown Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior sprinter Brooke Ury broke a 30-year old program record in the women's 60 meter hurdles as the Brown track and field teams each took home titles while hosting the Brown Invitational on Saturday.
Ury won the hurdles with a time of 8.49 seconds, surpassing the old program benchmark of 8.50 which had been held by Susan Smith since 1993. Ury ran a prelim time of 8.56 before breaking the record in the finals, both of which shattered her previous personal record of 8.65. The mark puts her at No. 2 in the Ivy League and tied for third in the Northeast Region entering next weekend's Ivy League Heptagonal Championships.
Overall, Brown's men tallied 13 podium finishes, including sweeps of the top three spots in the 60 meters and the mile. The women's team boasted 18 podium finishes including clean podium sweeps in the triple jump and 3,000 meters.
WOMEN
Junior Emma Gallant took second in the 60 meters with a personal-best time of 7.76 seconds. In the hurdles, Ury won the event with her school record time, and Simone Dunbar ran a 9.26 in the prelims before finishing fourth in the finals. In the 500 meters, senior Amy Willig ran a 1:17.49 to break the tape.
Brown swept the top six spots in the 3,000 meters with senior Grace Dorantes leading the way in 10:17.79. Emma Zwall, Sara Perez, Julia Antony and Emma Madgic rounded out the top five, while each setting new collegiate PRs.
Grace Desmond and Simone Dunbar finished one-two in the long jump, each leaping 4.97 meters. In the triple jump, Daryn Davis led the way for Brown and a sweep of the podium at 11.60 meters, followed by Makaya Fofana (11.35m) and Rachel Bibiu (10.31m).
Freshman Nene Mokonchu won the high jump at 1.66 meters, while classmate Adrienne Usher set a new collegiate PR in both the high jump (1.56m) and shot put (10.20m), finishing third in the high jump.
In the throws, Zoe Carter-Konate took runner-up at 16.83m in the weight throw, setting a new PR and improving her No. 8 mark on the program's all-time top performers list. She finished off the meet with her second PR of the day in the shot put (3rd/12.39m).
Kendra Ezeama took runner-up in the shot put (14.35m), with Chiamaka Odenigbo also setting a PR of 11.96m.
MEN
Brown had six of the eight runners in the 60 meter dash finals, sweeping the top four spots and all setting new PRs. Freshman Solomon Miller led the way with a victory in 6.96 seconds, followed by first-year JonCarlo Migaly (9.98), Daniel Sarisky (6.99) and Abayomi Lowe (7.01) in fourth. The hurdles saw junior Marcus Gillespie cruise to victory in 8.14 seconds, 0.02 seconds shy of his personal-best.
Brown took the top three spots in the mile, and four of the top five overall with John Farrell leading the way in 4:20.78, followed by Geordie Young (4:23.22) and Justin Hickey (4:24.14) in the top three and Jason Markopoulos (4:28.09) in fifth. Senior Gabe Cannavo took gold in the 3,000 meters at 9:05.27.
Junior John McNeil tied his personal-best at 2.12 meters to take first place in the high jump, which also ties his own mark for seventh on the school's all-time performers list.
Junior Zach Love took home a pair of wins in the long jump (6.92m) and triple jump (13.55m). Migaly (6.71m) took second in the long jump and Derek Irby (3rd/11.98m) finished on the podium in third of the triple jump.
In the throws, sophomore Tyler Gurth led Brown in fourth place in the shot put and set a new personal-best in the weight throw at 17.33 meters.
The Bears will now join the rest of the Ivy League in battling for a championship at the Ivy League Heps, which will take place next Saturday-Sunday, February 25-26 on the campus of Dartmouth College.
