Women's Fencing Posts Seven Wins at NFC #1

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Brown Bears opened the 2023-24 campaign with seven team wins at the NFC #1 at Boston College on Sunday.
Brown took victories over Wagner, Wellesley, Brandeis, Tufts, Sacred Heart, Vassar, and BC before falling to MIT in the final round. Alexandra Tzou led all Bears with a combined 19-2 mark in the sabre.
"We had a fantastic day today in our season opener at BC," said head coach Alex Ripa. "Falling only to MIT, Brown was extremely strong against all other opponents. This was a great way to start out season!"
The Bears opened the day with a 21-6 win over Wagner led by an 8-1 edge in the foil and a 7-2 edge in the epee. Apoorva Talwalkar (9-3) and Feyza Achilova (10-2) finished a perfect 3-0 in the foil, Amy Mao (14-7) was a perfect 3-0 in the epee, and Tzou (19-2) went 3-0 in the sabre.
The Bears then took an 18-9 win over Wellesley led by a 3-0 mark from Grace Li (8-4) in the foil. In the sabre, Tzou and Alyssa Sun (13-5) both finished 3-0.
Brown followed with a 19-8 win over Brandeis with Anika Breker (10-2) finishing 3-0 in the foil. Tzou again finished 3-0 with Soph Bililies (14-7) also finishing with three wins.
Brown dominated with a 23-4 win over Tufts to improve to 4-0 as a team. Breker and Jessie Chen (10-2) were perfect in the foil, Sofia Yee-Wadsworth (7-2) was unbeaten in the epee, and Sun was perfect in the sabre.
The foil trio of Achilova, Talwakar, and Samantha Chon (9-3) went a combined 9-0 in a 23-4 win over Sacred Heart in Round 5. Dasha Smuk (10-11) went 3-0 in the epee and Rebecca Whang (10-2) made her first appearance of the day with a 3-0 record in the sabre.
The Bears continued the winning run with a 24-3 victory over Vassar. Achilova and Chon both went 3-0 in the foil, Arianna Baffa (10-11) was 3-0 in the epee, and the sabre trio of Sun, Tzou, and Whang went unbeaten.
Brown was tested against host Boston College in Round 7, but prevailed by a 15-12 score. Chen was perfect in the foil and Breker chipped in two wins. Bililies, Tzou, and Whang all won two points in the sabre.
MIT ended Brown's run with a 17-10 win to close out the tournament. Tzou led the Bears with a 3-0 mark in the sabre.
