Women's Basketball Drops Home Game to URI

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown women's basketball dropped a home contest to Rhode Island Friday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Bears drop to 2-3 on the young season, while the Rams improve to 3-1.
Leading the charge for Brown was senior Kyla Jones with 16 points, three assists, three rebounds and two steals. Also in double figures were sophomore Grace Arnolie with 13 points, four assists and three steals and sophomore Ada Anamekwe with 10 points and three blocked shots.
Teams traded buckets over the opening minutes of the first quarter. Brown then went on an 8-2 run with that was capped off by a 3-pointer by freshman Olivia Young to take a 16-10 lead with 2:21 on the clock. URI scored four-straight points to finish the quarter.
After URI finished its 9-0 run dating back to the first quarter, Jones and Arnolie made inside baskets to give Brown a 20-19 lead at 7:31 in the second. URI closed the half on a 13-7 run to take a 32-27 halftime lead.
After a layup by Anamekwe cut the URI lead to three, the Rams scored six-consecutive points to take a 38-29 lead at 7:56 in the third. Brown cut it to four points after an and-one from Jones and a jumper from Arnolie. URI stayed on top and built its advantage to 48-41 heading to the fourth.
Arnolie hit a three to start the final quarter and make it a 48-44 game, but the Rams answered with two 3-pointers of their own and an and-one layup to go ahead, 59-48, with 5:23 remaining. A layup by Anamekwe would bring it to a six-point game, but URI made its free throws down the stretch and pulled away.
Brown travels to Loyola Chicago to face the Ramblers on Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET.
