Volleyball Earns Five-Set Win at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. – Brown volleyball (12-3, 3-2 Ivy) earned a five-set victory over Cornell (4-10, 2-3 Ivy) to win its third-straight game.
The Bears and Big Red traded sets as both teams played a very even game. The Bears hit .215 while Cornell hit .214. Brown led in digs (62-58) but trailed in assists (46-51) and blocks (8-9). The two teams were tied in kills (56) and aces (8).
Kayla Griebl led Brown with 15 kills and Kate Sheire had 14. Cierra Jenkins was two kills short of a triple double with eight kills, 37 assists and 10 digs. Jeknins also hit a team-best .571. Beau Vanderlaan had eight kills, hitting .368 with seven blocks.
Jessie Golden had 26 digs to lead the defense and Victoria Vo added eight.
Brown trailed 15-10 in the first set before kills by Sheire, Griebl and Vanderlaan helped Brown go on a 5-0 run to tie the set. Down two, Brown scored three-straight points to take a 19-18 lead. With the scored tied at 20, the Bears scored five of the next six points to take the set.
Cornell won the second set 25-18 but Brown responded to start the third set, going up 7-1. A 4-0 run that featured two kills by Jilienne Widener made the score 14-6 in favor of the Bears. Four-straight kills by Griebl put Brown up 10 and another 4-0 run with two blocks by the defense put the Bears up 23-11. Cornell scored six-straight points before kills by Jenkins and Griebl ended the set.
Brown fell behind early in set four and a big run by Cornell led to a 25-14 set win for the Big Red to send the match to a fifth set.
Cornell held a 7-5 lead in the final frame before a 3-0 run by the Bears that ended with a block by Jenkins and Vanderlaan. A 4-1 run by Cornell put Brown down 12-10 but Sheire added a kill and Sidorova had an ace to tie the set at 12. Down 13-12, Brown tied the set with a kill by Gabby Derrick and two errors by Cornell ended the match.
UP NEXT
Brown will head home for two matches next weekend taking on Dartmouth on Friday and Harvard on Saturday.
