Women's Tennis has Strong First Day of ITA Regionals
10/6/2023 5:18:00 PM | Women's Tennis
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Brown women's tennis had a strong opening day of the ITA Northeast Regionals on Friday at Harvard.
The doubles pairs of junior Lindsey Hofflander and sophomore Phoebe Peus and junior Nora Lee and sophomore Vivian Miller are moving on to Saturday. Freshmen Anne Yang and Dani Ben-Abraham won their first match of the day, but fell in the second round. In singles, senior Olivia Mariotti won her first round matchup.
Peus and Hofflander, and Miller and Lee each had byes in the opening round and took their second-round matches handily. Peus and Hofflander, who won the Hall of Fame Invite earlier in the fall, defeated Raiss and Fernando from LeMoyne, 8-1. Miller and Lee took care of Petri-Bere and Hinshaw of UConn, 8-4.
Yang and Ben-Abrraham won their first-round matchup, 8-4, over Sharma and Gulbransen of BU. Them were defeated by Sysova and Kimto from Syracuse in the second round.
Mariotti took down Rondini of Bryant (6-1, 4-6, 10-7) to advance in singles play.
"The Bears had a good day of competition today," said Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser. "Our doubles teams of Phoebe/Lindsey and Nora/Vivian are moving into the round of 16 with routine wins in their second round matches, playing aggressively and with clarity. Our freshmen duo of Anne and Dani played solid doubles in their first-round victory and lost to a very good Syracuse team in the next round. They have made tremendous improvement in their doubles games in just a short month and I look forward to their continued development."
"Olivia played very well in the first set of her singles match and even though she didn't play as well in the second set, she managed to pull off a third set tiebreaker victory with some courageous play. Gabby Soliman competed very well today. She was losing 4-6, 1-4, yet continued to battle hard, winning the second set. She was one point away from taking the match, but even though the match didn't go her way, it was good to see her competitiveness and "never say never" warrior mindset. We have two rounds of singles tomorrow and I look forward to watching our players battle against a tough regional field."
Brown continues at the ITA Regionals on Saturday.
