Cross Country Set for Ivy League Heps this Saturday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – With six regular season meets in the rearview mirror, the Brown cross country teams are set and ready to compete in the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships this Saturday at Franklin Park in Boston.
For the first time ever, the XC championships will be streamed live on ESPN+.

HISTORY
This will mark the first time Heps has ever been held at Franklin Park, and just the fourth different course the championships have been held, joining Van Cortland Park (NYC), West Windsor Fields (Princeton, N.J.) and Saucon Valley (Bethlehem, Pa.).
Both the men's and women's teams have one team title to their credit with the women earning theirs in 1999 and the men in 2003. Individually, the men have had five individual Ivy champions in program history in Edward Sullivan (1957), Bobby Lowe (1960), Chris Schille (1987), Greg Whiteley (1988), and Enda Johnson (2000). The women have had two in Sara Tindall winning consecutive crowns in 1999 and 2000.
Another first this weekend will the first ever Heps for Brown's two new head coaches, men's coach Collin Zeffer and women's coach John Kenworthy, wo took over the helms of their respective programs just after the start of the 2023 season in September.
MEN
The Bears have run three races so far this season at the 8K distance, including once at Franklin Park where the team averaged a finish of 26:31 while finishing fourth out of 15 teams at the New England Championships. The team's best times came at the IC4A Championships at Van Cortland Park on October 13 with an average time of 25:18. Senior Evan Sherman has finished as the team's frontrunner in three of his four meets thus far, while finishing second on the team at IC4As. Junior Miles Mullins has led the team's pack twice this season, while senior Jesse Edelstein has two team runner-up finishes and has scored in three of his four meets.
WOMEN
The women's squad has run its last three races at the six-kilometer distance, putting forth the best season average finish of 19:44 at the New England Championships at Franklin Park on Oct 7. They averaged 22:02 in their most recent team meet at Van Cortland Park and the ECAC Championships on Oct. 13. The team contains a large amount of young talent, with some experienced upperclassmen returning this season. Sophomore Nimrit Ahuja returned midway through the season and competed at Paul Short and the ECAC Championships, leading the team at ECACs with a 32nd place overall finish of 21:46.3. Junior Isolde McManus has placed in the team's top four in all three of her meets, and senior Katie Orchard has been a steady scorer for the Bears throughout this season. Senior Stephanie Kriss led the team with a fourth place overall finish out of 160 in her season debut the New England Championships, and took 44th overall out of 288 (2nd on the team) in her only other meet at ECACs.
UP NEXT
After this weekend, the Bears will compete at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships at Van Cortland Park in New York on Friday, November 10 to compete for qualifying spots to the NCAA Championship Meet.
