
Bears Return from Break at West Point Open

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Brown men's and women's track and field teams returned from the holiday break on Friday afternoon at the West Point Open, hosted by the U.S. Military Academy. The meet featured predominantly the team's sprinters, jumpers and a small group of throwers.
On the men's side, Brown captured 11 podium finishes, including three from Daniel Sarisky in the 200 meters (1st place), the 60 meters (third place) and as a member of the first place 4x400 meter relay team. Senior Zach Love was also a member of the 4x400m team and added runner-up finishes in the 200 meters and long jump, and junior John McNeil won gold in both the high jump and long jump.
The women had six individual event wins and 14 podium finishes. Junior Lauren Yeboah-Kodie won both events she competed in (hurdles and triple jump), junior Emma Gallant won the 200 meters and was on the second place 4x400m relay team, and freshman Jenna Lowrey placed third in the 400 meters and won silver with the 4x400m relay team.
MEN
In the sprints, Sarisky placed third and freshman Frank Monahan-Morang took fifth place in the 60m dash finals. Sarisky was victorious in the 200m, taking the gold in 22.40 seconds, with Love taking runner-up in personal-record time of 22.55. In the 400 meters, freshman Jason Estrada finished second overall with a time of 50.65.
In the 60-meter hurdles, junior Marcus Gillespie took second in the prelims, then shaved a full tenth of a second off that time in the finals to finish second overall in 8.24 seconds, setting a new PR by 0.03 seconds faster his time from the season-opening Alden Invitational.
The men's 4x400m relay team also captured gold with the quartet of Sarisky, Estrada, Love and Jack Kelley taking first place in 3:25.013, edging out the team from Army by one-thousandth of a second.
Brown dominated in the jumps once again, with McNeil and senior Sidarth Raman taking the top two spots in the high jump, with McNeil clearing 2.10 meters, and Raman at 2.04m.
McNeil captured his second title of the day with a personal-record in the long jump at 7.39m. Brown took six of the top seven spots overall in the event, including the first six spots occupied by collegiate athletes. Love took second place overall (6.99m), followed by Monahan-Morang (PR-6.87m) in fourth, Raman (5th/6.78m), Sam Hurcomb (6th/6.78m) and Joseph Oduro (7th/6.74m).
Oduro went on to capture an individual gold in the triple jump at 14.11 meters.
WOMEN
In the 200 meters, Gallant took first place with her time of 26.48, followed by Iris Wang (5th/27.12) and Brooke Ury (6th/27.16).
The Bears landed two in the top four of the 400 meters, led by Anjoli Mathew in first place at 58.95, along with Lowrey in 1:00.23. Gallant took fourth, followed by Wang in sixth.
Yeboah-Kodie took home gold in the 60m hurdles with a new personal record of 8.72 seconds, just ahead of Ury (9.12) who finished third, and Chiamaka Odenigbo who took fourth.
The 4x400 meter relay team took second place in 4:00.87 with Gallant, Lowrey, Kate Scanlan and Wang.
Freshman Nene Mokonchu and sophomore Rudecia Bernard helped Brown sweep the top two spots, respectively in the high jump, with Mokonchu clearing 1.70m and Bernard topping 1.65m.
Sophomore Jada Joseph led the way with a victory in the long jump at 5.74m, winning by a full 34 centimeters.
Yeboah-Kodie added her second victory to her credit in the triple jump at 12.51 meters, just two centimeters of her PR. Freshman Makaya Fofana took runner-up at 11.27 meters.
In the throws, junior Kendra Ezeama took home bronze with a shot put of 13.30 meters. Brown took four of the top five spots in the weight throw, including a second place, personal-best throw from Chidinma Agbasi (17.00m), third place showing from Sophia Gallucci (16.90m), Mackenzie Palinski (4th/15.53m) and Nicolette Ducharme (5th/14.98m).
The Bears will compete next weekend at the UMass Winter Open on Sunday, January 15 at the New Balance Track in Boston.
