Bears Earn Three Wins at Sunday’s UMass Flagship Invite

BOSTON, Mass. – The Brown track and field teams got five podium finishes and three individual wins from its women's program as the Bears took part in the UMass Flagship Invitational at The Track at New Balance in Boston on Sunday.
Junior Lauren Yeboah-Kodie won both of her events for the second straight meet and set new personal records in both the triple jump and 60-meter hurdles, launching herself into the top 10 in program history in both events. Freshman Nene Mokonchu won the high jump title for the third consecutive meet, junior Anjoli Mathew finished second in the 200 meters and Kendra Ezeama took bronze in the shot put.
WOMEN
Sophomore Jada Joseph set a new PR of 8.15 seconds competing in the prelims of the 60-meter dash. Mathew set the first of her two new PRs on the day with a strong sixth place finish out of 83 runners in the 200 meters in 25.25 seconds. She also added a second place finish out of 33 in the 400 meters with her PR of 57.34 seconds. Freshman Kate Scanlan also set new personal-bests in both the 200 meters (26.31) and 400 meters (59.26).
Brown placed four runners in the top 10 out of 35 runners in the 1,000 meters with junior Isa Stronski leading the way for the Bears in 2:57.84, a new personal-best. Sophomore Isolde McManus finished seventh in 2:59.03, junior Stephanie Kriss (2:59.37) took eighth and freshman Nimrit Ahuja (2:59.88) placed 10th, all setting PRs.
Yeboah-Kodie took home the gold with her win in the 60-meter hurdles, setting a new personal record with her time of 8.71 seconds, vaulting her into the top 10 in program history.
In the jumps, Mokonchu won the high jump for the third time in as many meets this season, tying her high mark of 1.71 meters. Junior Chiamaka Odenigbo finished sixth out of 39 in the long jump, leaping 5.52 meters. Yeboah-Kodie leapt 12.64 meters in the triple jump, taking first place overall out of 22 placers, improving her top-10 all-time mark in program history. Joining her in the top five of the triple jump was Joseph, who leapt 11.78 meters to finish fifth overall.
Ezeama placed third out of 29 in the shot put at 13.38 meters. Freshman Zoe Carter-Konate took eighth place overall at 16.80 meters, setting a new PR.
MEN
Sophomore Daniel Sarisky led the Bears with a fourth place finish out of 65 runners in the 200 meters with a time of 21.75. Junior Zach Love (7th/22.27) and freshman Jason Estrada (9th/22.34) both finished in the top 10 with PRs and senior Ethan Gardner set a PR of 22.60 to place 19th.
Junior Jack Kelley placed sixth out of 30 in the 400 meters, while Estrada set his second PR of the day in 50.47 to place ninth. In the 4x400 meters, Kelley, Sarisky, Estrada, and Love combined on a time of 3:22.74 to take fifth place out of 19 teams.
In the long jump, junior John McNeil led the Bears with a fourth place finish overall out of 34 competitors with his 7.03-meter leap. Junior Sam Hurcomb (5th/6.83), freshman Frank Monahan-Morang (6th/6.82m), and senior Zach Love (7th/6.81m) also finished in the top 10. Freshman Joseph Oduro placed fourth in the triple jump, leaping 14.05 meters.
Sophomore Tyler Gurth placed ninth out of 29 in the weight throw with a new personal-best mark of 17.03m. Freshman Liam Capozza also set a new PR in the weight throw at 17.31 meters, a 22-centimeter improvement over December's Alden Invitational.
Brown will head down I-95 for its next meet this coming Saturday, January 21 at the URI Invitational in Kingston, R.I.
