PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's tennis team competed at a pair of events during the first weekend of competition for the Bears during the 2022 fall season.
Britany Lau, Addison Ahlstrom, Nora Lee, and Vivian Miller competed at the doubles-only event, the International Tennis Hall of Fame Women's Collegiate Invitational. Phoebe Peus, Ali Benedetto, Olivia Mariotti, Lindsey Hofflander, and Gabby Soliman competed at the Bulldog Invitational at Yale.
The weekend was highlighted by Lau and Ahlstrom winning four straight matches to claim the ITHF Women's Collegiate Invitational championship. In the process, they defeated one team from Dartmouth and three from Boston College.
Lee and Miller lost their first match of the weekend at the ITHF, but bounced back to take three in a row to become champions of the back draw. They earned victories over teams from Boston U., URI, and Georgetown.
"Our team had an unbelievable opportunity to compete on the grass courts at the International Tennis Hall of Fame," assistant coach Matt Haugen said. "Our players competed with intensity and grit. All weekend our teams problem solved, adjusted their game styles and implemented strategy to make their opponents uncomfortable and our teams had impressive results.
"Nora Lee and Vivian Miller evolved from their first to their last match into a team that had a clear identity and purpose with their style of play. Britany Lau and Addie Ahlstrom showed great resiliency in their matches, competed with poise in pressure moments and won three matches in deciding super tiebreakers in route to a championship. I look forward to seeing their continued progress and development during the rest of this fall season and expect their results to translate into singles competitions as well."
At the Bulldog Invitational, the Bears took on competitors from Boston U., Rutgers, and Yale. Soliman was a perfect 3-0 on the weekend in singles, winning all three of her matchups. Mariotti went 2-1, while Hofflander and Benedetto each won one match.
In doubles, Peus and Soliman won their match against a Rutgers duo.
"Our players had the opportunity to test themselves against high quality teams for three days in a row," head coach Lucie Schmidhauser said. "With each match, our ability to stay in points, challenge opponents and problem-solve when things were not going our way improved. Today's performance against Yale was the best of the weekend. I look forward to seeing the players take the information from this event to the practice court and the next event.
"Gabby Soliman went 3-0 in singles competing with clarity, determination and fight. Olivia, Lindsey, and Ali also competed very well, setting the bar for the fight and resiliency that will be needed to compete for and represent Brown women's tennis in the spring team season."
