Men Finish Runner-up, Women Take Third to Open XC Season at Franklin Park

BOSTON, Mass. – The Brown men's cross country team took second place, while the women finished third to open up the 2022 season on Friday afternoon at the Suffolk Short Course Classic at Franklin Park in Boston.
Brown, who raced all upperclassmen, was one of 15 schools at the meet, and one of four Division I schools.
MEN
Junior Evan Sherman and sophomore Justin Hickey led the men's pack for Brown in the 5K race, helping the team to a runner-up finish with 56 points. Northeastern took home the team title with a perfect score of 15, with Boston University (72) taking third and Holy Cross (117) in fourth.
Sherman (15:47.9) and Hickey (15:52.3) finished back-to-back in seventh and eighth places, respectively, to pace the Bears. Senior Colby Zarle (16:00.5) finished 10th overall, followed by senior Aaron Siff-Scherr (13th/16:08.8) and senior Jesse Edelstein (23rd/16:29.9) to round out Brown's top five. Senior Gabriel Cannavo placed 39th overall in 16:57.1 and Henry Wood placed 50th in 17:15.3 to round out the team's top seven.
WOMEN
Brown's women finished in third place out of 15 schools with 66 points, with the field's four Division I teams taking the top four spots: Northeastern (16), Boston U. (56), Brown (66) and Holy Cross (96). The 3.1-kilometer race featured 125 runners.
Isolde McManus led the way for the Bears with an eighth place finish overall in 11:09.5, followed by Isa Stronski (11:21.1) in 12th and Emily Moini (11:21.9) in 13th. Senior Emma Madgic (11:27.1) and sophomore Maxine Montoya (11:29.8) finished back-to-back in 16th and 17th, respectively, to round out Brown's top five. Junior Katie Orchard (11:32.4) placed 19th and senior Lily Harding (11:32.8) crossed the finish line in 20th place to complete Brown's top seven. Sarah Reichheld followed close behind with a 22nd place overall finish in 11:46.6.
Brown will return to action next weekend with each program competing in two meets, starting with the men at the Friar Invitational on Friday, Sept. 9. The women will compete on Saturday at the Maribel Sanchez Souther Invitational at Dartmouth. Both teams will also have athletes competing at the Nassaney Invitational, hosted by Bryant, on Saturday.
