Volleyball comes from behind to earn five-set win over Texas A&M Corpus Chrisit

HOUSTON – Brown volleyball closed out its weekend at Rice with a five-set comeback against Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Saturday night. The Bears dropped the first game of the day to Texas Tech 3-0.
BROWN 3, TEXAS A&M CORPUS CHRISTI 2
The Bears overcame a sluggish start and picked up a five-set win over Corpus Christi. Brown was led by Sophia Miller with 19 kills and freshman Mariia Sidorova collected a career-high 16 kills. Kate Sheire finished the game in double-figure kills as well with 11 and Beau Vanderlaan tallied nine.
Kate Danaher guided Brown's offense with 55 assists. The Bears hit .273 as a team and five Bears hit over .300 with two Bears hitting at least .400.
On defense, Victoria Vo led the backline with 21 digs, followed by freshman Jessie Golden with 12. Miller was the third Bear to have double-figure digs, collecting 10, to finish with a double-double. At the net, Gabby Derrick led Brown with seven blocks. Vanderlaan and Sheire each had five.
After dropping the first two sets, 26-24 and 25-19, Brown started the third set down 8-4. A quick 4-0 run by the Bears that featured two blocks and kill by Sidorova tied up the set. The teams traded points until the Islanders took a 19-16 lead. Brown responded with two kills by Miller and a kill and block by Derrick to jump ahead 21-19. The Bears earned set point at 24-22 after a block by Sheire and Vanderlaan and two points later, a kill by Vanderlaan gave Brown the set.
Set four was back-and-forth with Brown taking the first three-point lead at 15- 12 after a kill by Danaher and an error. A 4-0 run with a kill by Sidorova and three-straight from Miller put Brown up 23-18. After a point by Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Brown scored the next two to force a deciding set.
Brown was 0-2 in five-set matches coming into the game but opened up a 7-4 lead after an ace by Golden. The Islanders scored one point before Brown took advantage of four-straight errors to go up 11-5. The Bears were able to close out the match with kills by Vanderlaan, Miller and Sheire, winning set five 15-10.
TEXAS TECH 3, BROWN 0
The Bears struggled on offense in the first game of the day, dropping a straight-set match to Texas Tech. Brown hit just .052 for the game and hit below .000 in the first two sets.
Sophia Miller was tops in kills for the Bears with nine but hit just .074. Jilienne Widner was second on the team with seven kills and hit a team-high .160.
Brown cut the Texas Tech lead to one at 13-12 with a kill by Widener but Tech scored five of the next six points. After an error by the Red Raiders, Tech took the set scoring the next seven points.
The Bears tied the second set at 12 with a service ace by Victoria Vo but six of the next seven points went to Texas Tech and Brown was not able to overcome the deficit, falling the second set 25-18.
Brown fell behind early in the third, pulling within four at 20-16 after a kill by Miller and an error but Texas Tech ended the match, scoring the next five points.
UP NEXT
Brown will be on the road for two games on Saturday (Sept. 17), at UConn. The Bears will play Lindenwood and UConn.
