Volleyball splits two matches on Saturday with win over Lindenwood

STORRS, Conn. – Brown volleyball beat Lindenwood in four sets as the Bear split two games on Saturday (Sept. 17). Brown lost to UConn in four sets earlier in the day.
BROWN 3, LINDENWOOD 1
The Bears were led by a career-high 12 kills by senior Elise Curtin in a four-set win over Lindenwood (25-18, 27-25, 23-25, 25-17). Curtin also tied a career-high with six blocks, a number she set earlier in the day against UConn. Curtin finished the game hitting .450, committing just three errors.
Kayla Griebl, Beau Vanderlaan, Kate Sheire and Mariia Sidorova all finished with eight kills for Brown. Freshman Ella Park guided Brown's offense with 36 assists and added 16 digs for a double-double.
On defense, the Bears were led by 21 digs from Victoria Vo. Brown finished the game with a 64-57 advantage in digs and had 10 blocks.
The Bears offense started out strong, hitting .367 in the first set. Up by one at 15-14, Brown used a 4-0 run featuring two kills by Sophia Miller to go up five. Two kills by Curtin and errors by Lindenwood wrapped up the set for Brown.
Lindendwood held an early lead in set two until kills by Sidorova, Griebl and Vanderlaan put Brown up by one. The Lions were up 12-10 before Brown went on a 9-0 run highlighted by the defense to start. Curtin was part of three-straight blocks for the Bears, teaming with Sheire for two and Sidorova for one. Curtin, Sidorova and Griebl all had kills at the end of the run.
The Bears gave back seven of the next eight points and after another 3-0 run, the set was tied 22-22. Brown earned set point with a kill by Park before two-straight points from Lindenwood. Brown fought off a set point before Curtin scored two kills to give Brown a 2-0 match lead.
Brown was down for much of set three but used a late run to earn a 23-21 lead after a kill by Curtin. The Bears couldn't complete the sweep as Lindenwood scored the next four points to force a fourth set.
Set four began with a Brown 8-1 run and after a service ace by Jessie Golden and error by Lindenwood, Brown was up 14-3. A kill by Sheire, block by Vanderlaan and two more aces from Golden put Brown up 23-12. Lindenwood scored five-straight points before an error and kill by Sidorova gave Brown the win.
UCONN 3, BROWN 1
Brown's offense struggled against UConn, hitting just .136 in a four-set loss to the Huskies (25-16, 25-19, 18-25, 32-30). Sophia Miller finished the game with a 13-kill, 12-dig double-double. Kate Sheire had 10 kills and Jilienne Widener had seven. Ella Park posted a career-best 42 assists for the Bears.
Victoria Vo led the Bears with 17 digs and Elise Curtin and Beau Vanderlaan had six blocks each to lead Brown's net defense.
Brown fell behind early 13-5 but climbed back into the set at 14-10 from a kill by Curtin. Brown would get within four multiple times but never got any closer, falling to UConn in the first set.
Tied at eight in the second set, Brown allowed UConn to go on a 5-0 run to jump ahead. Down 18-11, Brown went on a 6-1 run with kills by Widener, Sheire and Vanderlaan to make it a two-point set but UConn scored five of the last six points in the set to go up 2-0.
To stay alive in the match, Brown jumped out to a 12-7 lead after a block by the duo of Miller and Curtin. A 4-0 run with two kills by Widener and a block by Widener and Vanderlaan put the Bears up seven. Another 4-0 run late in the set, capped by a block from Vanderlaan gave Brown set point. UConn fought off two set points but a kill by Miller set the match to a fourth set.
The teams traded runs throughout the fourth set with UConn eventually taking a 23-21 lead. Two kills by Sidorova helped give Brown set point at 24-23 but UConn fought off five-straight set points for Brown. After UConn earned set point at 29-28, Brown scored two-straight points with a block by Sheire and Vanderlaan to give Brown another set point. The Bears again couldn't capitalize, allowing three-straight points to UConn to end the match.
UP NEXT
Brown will head back home to begin Ivy League play against Yale on Friday (Sept. 23). The match against Yale will begin at 7 p.m.
