PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Eight men's crew student-athletes and Assistant Coach Scott Cockle are set to represent their respective nations at the 2022 World Rowing Under-23 Championships next week in Varese, Italy.
The U23 Championships will begin on Monday, July 25 and continue through Saturday, July 30.
Four Americans will race in the US Eight next week with Will Legenzowski donning the Red, White, and Blue for the second consecutive summer. The Vista, New York native raced in the single sculls last summer in Racice, Czech Republic.
Coxswain Jack DiGiovanni and oarsmen Charlie Fargo and Kai Hoite join Legenzowski in the Eight. All four Bears raced in the Varsity 8 during the spring season and picked up Second Team All-Ivy honors. DiGiovanni, Fargo, and Legenzowski also earned IRCA All-America honors this spring.
DiGiovanni represents the United States for the first time in Italy while Fargo and Hoite previously competed at the 2018 World Rowing Junior Championships.
Freshman Oliver Page-Kuhr will represent Canada in the Men's Eight. Page-Kuhr raced with the V8 and 2V8 during the season, helping the latter take second at the 75th Eastern Sprints. Page-Kuhr represents Canada for the first time in international competition.
Sophomore Willem Stoop heads to Italy to represent the Netherlands and race in the Men's Quad. Stoop was an IRCA Scholar-Athlete and helped the 2V8 finish second at the Eastern Sprints and fifth at the IRA Championship. Stoop competes in the U23 World Championships for the second straight season.
Freshman Enno Moench will race with Germany in the Coxed Four in Italy while making his debut at the U23 Championships. The Hamburg native raced with the 2V8 in every race this spring. Moench represented Germany at the 2021 World Rowing Junior Championships.
IRCA Second Team All-American Gabriel Mahler will represent the Czech Republic. No stranger to international competition, Mahler competed at the 2022 World Rowing Cup II and at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games.
Cockle heads to Italy to represent Great Britain at the U23 World Championships for the second straight year. The coxswain will guide the Great Britain Men's Eight as they seek their second straight gold medal.
The eight student-athletes mark a program-best for Brown by a considerable margin. Four Bears competed at the 2021 World Rowing U23 Championships and three Bears competed at the 2018 and 2019 Championships.
