WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – For the first time since 2015, all three Brown crews qualified for the Grand Finals during Saturday's semifinal races on the second day of the 2022 IRA Championship on Mercer Lake.
The Varsity 8 crew finished third in their race while the 2V8 and 3V8 crews both finished second. All three Brown crews will race in Sunday's Grand Finals for the first time since 2015.
Bruno's Varsity 4 boat finished fourth in Saturday's Petite Final to take 10th overall in the event.
"The energy today was strong and it was a big step forward for the team to put all of the Eights into the Grand Final," said Head Coach Paul Cooke '89.
The Varsity 8 kept pace with a pair of Ivy foes, Yale and Dartmouth, in the first 500 meters of the semifinal race with Syracuse close behind in fourth. In the second leg of the race, Yale stretched its lead to a boat-length while the Orange charged and passed Dartmouth and sat even with Brown at the 1,000-meter mark.
Syracuse kept its pace through the third leg with the fastest split time, but Yale had enough of a lead for a 1.8-second win in the race. Brown held a four-seat lead over Dartmouth halfway through and extended to 3.6 seconds at the finish line.
Yale, Syracuse, and Brown advanced to Sunday's Grand Final, joining Cal, Harvard, and Washington from the first semifinal. Sunday's race is scheduled to begin at 10:50 a.m.
The 2V8 sat third at the 500-meter mark with Cal and Princeton holding the top-two spots, respectively. Cal, Princeton, and Brown kept the same order through the second leg of the race with Harvard and Boston U. respectively trailing in fourth and fifth.
The third leg saw movement as Brown passed Princeton and closed the gap on Cal while Boston U. charged and passed Harvard and lessened the gap with Princeton. The Terriers gained more ground on the Tigers in the final 500 meters, but could not pass and take the final qualifying spot.
Cal, Brown, and Princeton advanced to tomorrow's Grand Final with Dartmouth, Washington, and Yale earning the three spots in the second semifinal. Sunday's race is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
The 3V8 crew captured second in their semifinal race to send all three Bruno shells to Sunday's Grand Finals. The Bears sat in second throughout the race with Harvard in first and Dartmouth in third. The Terriers made a push in the second half to challenge Dartmouth for third, but the Big Green held off BU to send three Ivy boats to the Grand Final.
Brown, Dartmouth, and Harvard will race at 9:30 a.m. in tomorrow's Grand Final with Cal, Washington, and Yale.
The V4 boat sat sixth in the Petite Final through the first 500 meters, trailing fifth-place Northeastern by 1.7 seconds. Cal pushed to the front of the pack in the second leg of the race and did not relinquish, clocking a time of 6:27.119 for the Petite Final victory and seventh overall.
The Bears were still in sixth at the midpoint of the race, but pushed past Jacksonville in the third leg and pressed on to overtake Holy Cross in the final 500 meters to finish fourth in the Petite Final with a time of 6:32.725. Bruno edged out Holy Cross by three-tenths of a second for fourth and a top-10 overall finish.
