
Frey and McMeniman Set School Records to Highlight Day One of Heps

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Seniors Maddie Frey and Erin McMeniman both broke school records on Saturday's day one of the Ivy League Heptagonal Outdoor Track and Field Championships. McMeniman broke her own school record while winning the silver medal in the javelin, while Frey broke a 32-year old record in the prelims of the 200 meter dash.
As a team, the Brown men sit in second place with 27 points through one day of competition, nine points behind Princeton for the top spot. The women currently sit fourth with 23 points, just three points out of first place behind Penn (26), Princeton (25) and Cornell (25).
Elsewhere on the women's side, freshman Sophia Gallucci took home third place in the finals of the hammer throw, while Altan Mitchell (long jump) and Kevin Fairchild (javelin) both earned silver medals for their runner-up finishes on the men's side.
WOMEN
Frey's new school record of 23.88 seconds in the 200 meter dash qualified her for Sunday's finals, surpassing the old school benchmark by 0.02 seconds, which had been held by Teri Smith since 1990. The performance came just two weeks after Frey turned in the No. 2 time in program history.
McMeniman takes silver overall after breaking her own school benchmark in the javelin, turning in a 49.62m (162'9) throw, surpassing her own benchmark of 48.23m (158'3) that she set earlier this season at the Black & Gold Invitational. The mark came on her final throw of the day and earned her second place overall.
Kenzii Phillips also scored points in sixth place for Bruno in the javelin at 40.54m (133'0).
Sophomore Emma Gallant also qualified for the 200m finals after posting a 24.76 prelim time. Frey and Sydney Scott each qualified for the finals of the 100 meter dash, with Scott setting a new PR of 11.90.
Sophia Gallucci took bronze in the finals of the hammer throw, setting a new PR at 55.06 meters (180'8) for the No. 4 spot in program history. Mackenzie Palinski followed close behind in fourth at 53.99m (177'1) on her final throw for a new personal record.
In the long jump, Brown had two scorers in Lauren Yeboah-Kodie and Lauren Stern with Yeboah-Kodie (5.92m/19'5.25 setting a new PR with a fourth place jump, and Stern placing seventh at 5.75m (18'10.5).
In Saturday's prelims, Daryn Davis and Yeboah-Kodie landed themselves in Sunday's finals of the 100 meter hurdles, with Davis setting a new PR and running the sixth fastest time in school history at 14.04, finishing sixth. Yeboah-Kodie rounded out the qualifiers with a mark of 14.27, also a PR.
Anjoli Mathew placed seventh in the 400m hurdle prelims to 1:03.58 to qualify for the finals.
MEN
Kegan Schroeter took fourth place overall in the hammer throw with his mark of 58.38 meters (191'6).
Mitchell took home the bronze in the long jump, leaping 7.38 meters on his second attempt. John McNeil (7.25m/23'9.5) and Zachary Love (7.23m/23'8.75) followed right behind in fourth and fifth, respectively, with Love setting a new PR by one centimeter in the event.
In the javelin, Brown earned another podium finish from Fairchild, who also took third place with a 64.80m (212'7) throw. Joe Grula followed in fourth at 63.68 meters (208'11) on his second throw. Chris White also scored points for the Bears with his sixth place throw at 58.34m (191'5).
Earlier in the day in the prelims, senior Bretram Rogers took first place in 110m hurdle prelims to qualify for Sunday's finals, finishing in 14.11 seconds. He also qualified for the finals on Sunday's 400 meter hurdles, placing seventh in 55.15 seconds.
In the 100m dash, freshman Daniel Sarisky finished his prelim heat in 10.51 seconds, the second fastest in school history and besting his previous PR by 0.13 seconds. Sarisky qualified himself for the finals of the 200 meter dash, setting another PR at 21.26 seconds which ranks sixth all-time in program history.
In the decathlon, senior Jono Pelusi finds himself in third place 3,492 points through five events heading into Sunday, finishing third in the 100m, 400m and long jump.
UP NEXT
