
Women's sailing takes fifth at Fleet Race National Championship, five bears earn All-America honors

NEW ORLEANS – The Brown women's sailing team finished in fifth place out of 18 teams at the Women's Fleet Race National Championship hosted by Tulane.
The Bears had an overall team score of 169. Boston College won the event with a score of 114. The rest of the top five was rounded out by Yale (116), Stanford (119), and Harvard (139).
Brown also had five sailors earn All-America recognition. Olivia Belda was named a Women's All-American Skipper. Caroline Bayless earned Honorable Mention Women's All-American Skipper honors. Madeleine McGrath and Julia Reynolds were both named All-American Crews, while Emma Montgomery was named an Honorable Mention All-American Crew.
The competition began with two semifinals of 18 teams each for a total of 36, which was then trimmed down to 18 with the top nine finishers in each semifinal. Brown finished in third place in its semifinal, with Harvard and Stanford taking the top two spots.
Belda, Montgomery, Blaire McCarthy, Nora Ong, and Savannah Young competed in Division A for the Bears and took fourth. Bayless, Reynolds, Brielle Willoughby, Madeleine McGrath, Ong, and Emi Ruth came in second in Division B. Their combined 154 was just ten points behind first place Harvard.
In the finals, Belda, Montgomery, and McGrath represented the Bears in Division A. Their score of 72 was good for fourth in the division. In Division B, Bayless, McCarthy, McGrath, and Reynolds scored a 97 and took eighth. The combined 169 placed Brown fifth overall.
Yale, Harvard, and Brown made up the top three Ivy finishers. Cornell came in eighth, Dartmouth 11th, and Penn 13th.
