PRINCETON, N.J. – Three members of the Brown baseball team have earned All-Ivy League honors, the league announced on Thursday.
Junior righthander Tobey McDonough earned First Team All-Ivy honors, junior first baseman Ryan Marra was named to the Second Team, and sophomore reliever Paxton Meyers earned Honorable Mention accolades. In addition, junior Ray Sass was named to the Academic All-Ivy Team. It is the first all-league honor for each player.
McDonough made a team-high 11 starts on the mound for Brown this season, finishing the year ranked third in the Ivy League with a 3.17 ERA. He ranked ninth in the Ivy by striking out 52 batters over 65.1 innings, while issuing just 16 walks and holding opponents to a .226 average. He tossed 6.0 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts in his season debut and first career start at Memphis on Feb. 26 and picked up his first win at USF on March 5. He allowed just one run on four hits over 7.0 innings of work at Penn on April 23, and struck out seven batters while allowing just one run on five hits over 7.0 innings of work in a win over Cornell in his final appearance on May 7.
Marra was a rock for the Bears at first base this season, starting all 36 games. He tied for third in the Ivy League with 10 home runs, becoming the first Brown player to hit double-digit home runs since 2010. He led the team in several categories including slugging percentage (.558), OPS (.960), RBIs (27) runs scored (26) and hit by pitches (10). He ranked second on the team in batting average (.304), hits (42), and stolen bases (9). His nine stolen bases ranked eighth in the Ivy, while his .558 slugging percentage ranked 10th in the league. He tallied 11 multi-hit games, including five three-hit games, and had three hitting streaks of at least five games, including a season-long seven game streak. Defensively, he ranked third in the league in putouts (289) and eighth in fielding percentage (.990). One of his pivotal moments came on April 30 when he clubbed a walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth inning against Princeton.
Meyers was a key piece to Brown's bullpen this season with a team-high 19 relief appearances. His 3.16 ERA ranked second in the Ivy League while posting a 4-2 record. He struck out 39 batters over 37.0 innings while holding opponents to a .223 batting average. He was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week after throwing a season-high 6.0 innings of two-hit relief without allowing an earned run to earn the win against Princeton on April 30, and picked up the win in relief with 2.2 innings of work in the season finale against Cornell. Meyers was also key in helping Brown's bullpen toss 34.2 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run from April 17-May 7.
Sass has been named to the Academic All-Ivy team for both his work in the classroom and on the field. Starting all 36 games for Brown between both middle infield spots and DH, Sass ranked third on the team with a .268 batting average and .388 on-base percentage. He tied for third in the Ivy with 12 steals and tied for the team lead with 21 walks, while scoring 23 runs. Off the field, Sass also served as a student worker in Brown's athletic communications office.
Brown concluded the 2022 season by winning five of its last six games to finish 13-23 (8-13 Ivy) and in sixth place in the Ivy League.
