
Coed sailing takes third at Nationals, Nelson and Murphy earn All-American honors

NEW ORLEANS – The Brown coed sailing team took third place at the Open Fleet Race National Championship this Sunday, May 22 at Tulane.
Tulane claimed first place after posting an overall team score of 223. Yale came in second at 224 and the Bears claimed third at 246.
In addition to their third-place team finish, the Bears also had two student-athletes named All-Americans. Connor Nelson was named an All-American Skipper, while Jack Murphy earned All-American Honorable Mention Skipper honors. Murphy was also recognized as a finalist for the Sportsman of the Year award.
Brown took third place after four total days of competition that begin with two days of semifinal action. A total of 36 teams were split into two semifinals of 18 with the top nine finishers from each advancing to the finals.
In the Bears' semifinal, the Western Semifinal, they finished ninth with a score of 187 to qualify for the finals. Rhode Island took first at 137.
Connor Nelson and Julia Reynolds competed for Brown in Division A and came in 12th with a 115. In Division B, Olivia Belda, Jack Murphy, Emma Montgomery, and Madeleine McGrath combined to score a 72, good for fifth place. The two scores combined gave the Bears the ninth and final qualifying spot for the finals out of their semifinal.
In the finals, the same breakdown of sailors competed for Brown across both divisions. Nelson and Reynolds improved to fifth in Division A with a 107, while the group in Division B took seventh at 139. Together, the Bears' combined 246 was the third best out of all 18 teams.
Of the 18 teams that qualified for the finals, four came from Ivy League institutions. Yale had the top finish among Ivy teams at second, Brown followed at third, while Dartmouth came in fourth and Harvard finished in 10th. Penn and Cornell both also competed, but were eliminated after their 11th and 13th-place respective finishes in the Western Semifinal.
Competition continues for the Brown women's team this week at the Women's Fleet Race National Championship, also hosted at Tulane, that will run from Monday, May 23 through Thursday, May 26.
