Women's Crew Captures 47th Eastern Sprints with Five Wins on Lake Quinsigamond
5/1/2022 7:20:00 PM | Women's Crew
WORCESTER, Mass. – The fifth-ranked Brown Bears won five Grand Final races at the 47th Eastern Sprints Sunday on Lake Quinsigamond to win the team title for the 11th time since 1990 while winning the Varsity 8 title for the ninth time since 1988.
Sunday's races in Worcester came on arguably the nicest day of the spring season weather-wise as temperatures hit the mid to upper 60s by the afternoon finals.
All three of Brown's eight boats won their respective morning heats and Grand Final races. Brown's A4 and B4 crews both won their morning heat and Grand Final. The C4 crew raced in the Grand Final and took third behind a pair of Rutgers crews.
"It was a good day of racing with excellent competition and excellent conditions," said head coach John Murphy. "Every member of our team raced hard, won a medal, and contributed to the team points trophy. We are looking forward to the next step which is the Ivy Championship."
The Bears came out strong in the morning heats with all five crews taking first in their respective heats. Brown's Varsity 8 crew clocked a time of 6:27.224 for a 10-second victory over Drexel.
The 2V8 crew clocked a time of 6:36.077 in the morning heat to finish comfortably ahead of Columbia (6:52.632) and Rhode Island (6:56.079). The 3V8 crew posted a time of 6:46.453 to cruise past Dartmouth (7:00.533) and Cornell (7:01.470).
The A4 boat finished 17 seconds ahead of Radcliffe in the morning heat with a time of 7:10.422. The B4 crew posted a time of 7:14.178 for a five and a half second win over Rutgers (7:19.734).
With the five wins in the morning heats, Brown qualified for the Grand Final in all five races and also had a crew in the C4 Grand Final.
The Varsity 8 crew posted a time of 6:39.857 for nearly a nine-second win over Rutgers (6:48.027) in the Grand Final, marking the ninth time the Bears have won the race and first time since 2008. Radcliffe finished third with a time of 6:52.347.
The 2V8 crew clocked a time of 6:46.667 to finish more than 11 seconds ahead of Rutgers (6:57.900). Cornell took third with a time of 7:02.490 to finish narrowly ahead of Boston University (7:03.580).
The Bears' 3V8 finished along the same lines of the 1V8 and 2V8 races as Brown posted a time of 6:50.393 to finish 9.1 seconds ahead of Rutgers. A pair of Ancient 8 programs – Cornell (7:03.944) and Columbia (7:05.058) – took third and fourth.
The A4 crew finished at 7:25.925 to take a 15-second victory in the Grand Final over second-place Radcliffe (7:40.983). Columbia finished third with a time of 7:43.543 and Cornell took fourth with a time of 7:48.470 for an all-Ivy top-four.
The B4 crew had the smallest margin of victory in the Grand Final wins with a 5.6-second victory over Rutgers after finishing with a time of 7:14.178. Columbia, Radcliffe, and Cornell finished third through fifth, respectively.
Rutgers B captured the lone non-Bruno win of the day in the C4 Grand Final after finishing with a time of 7:27.130. The Rutgers A crew (7:34.621) took second with the Bears taking third with a time of 7:48.628.
The Bears compete in the 2022 Ivy League Championships on Sunday (May 156:49.) at Cooper River Park in Pennsauken, New Jersey.
