PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's sailing team came in fourth place out of 12 teams at the inaugural Women's Team Race National Championship this weekend at the Edgewood Yacht Club.
The Bears finished the event with an 11-5 record, while Yale took first at 13-3 and Boston College and Stanford claimed second and third with 12-4 marks. Competing for the Bears were skippers Olivia Belda, Blaire McCarthy, and Carolina Bayless and crews Emma Montgomery, Nora Ong, Savannah Young, and Madeleine McGrath.
"I am extremely proud of our women's team who fought so hard until the very end of the regatta," head coach John Mollicone said. "It's always hard when you're so close to winning and just come up short. We were just one win out of second and two wins from first, but right there until the last races, leading most of the event. We made a few mistakes at the end and had a few umpire calls that were tough. You have to sail almost perfectly to win these major championships, and we'll take a lot from this weekend with us to the May Nationals in New Orleans."
Brown's coed team was also in competition this weekend as it took seventh out of 18 at the George Morris Trophy and 10th out of 15 at the Boston Dingy Cup.
Competition will continue next weekend for the coed team at a pair of events.
