PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Brown gymnastics team posted a score of 192.825 at Rutgers on Friday night, their third-highest total of the season.
As a team, Brown took third out of four at the meet, with NC State taking first place with 195.700, followed by Rutgers at 194.975, while Southern Connecticut State placed fourth with 187.100.
Junior Abby Contello posted career-highs in both of her events, a 9.725 on bars and 9.700 on beam. Sophomore Angela Xing also set a new career-high on vault at 9.800.
"I'm really proud of the way they performed tonight," said head coach Sara Carver-Milne. "I don't think the scores really reflected their performances. We added some difficulty in spots and had some new people in the lineup. We showed we're starting to reach out potential and still fighting for a spot to qualify at nationals. It's obvious the way they competed that they're fired up."
Starting off the meet on bars, senior Mei Li Costa anchored the event for Brown by taking second place overall at 9.850, followed by a score of 9.750 from Ella Poley. Contello posted a career-high score of 9.725, and Taylor Schulze scored 9.675. Brown posted a team score 48.400 on the event.
Next up on beam, Schulze led the way for Brown with her score of 9.825. Contello followed by setting a new personal record of 9.700, and McKenna Weiner was next in the third spot of Brown's order, posting a score of 9.525.
"Abby Contello had the meet of her life tonight and I was so happy for her to put it all together and compete like we know she can," Carver-Milne said. "She really shined out there on the big stage."
On floor, Julia Bedell led the way by taking third place and scoring a career-high of 9.825 points. Xing posted 9.625 points, Carolanne Van Zandt posted a mark of 9.525, while Lauren Lazaro averaged 9.500 on her floor routine.
To conclude the meet, Brown posted its highest score of the night on vault, totaling 48.625 points, the second-highest total of the four teams. Up second in Brown's rotation, Xing posted a new career-high with a mark of 9.800 to tie for second overall. Costa tied for fourth overall with 9.775 points, while Bedell was next with 9.750. Senior Alyssa Gardner tallied a vault score of 9.675, while Poley was next with 9.625 points.
"Angela was amazing on vault. She nailed her vault, it was so beautiful and the team went wild."
Up next, Brown will compete for the second time this weekend on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. at the Pizzitola Sports Center when they host GEC foe Bridgeport for a dual meet.
