Women's basketball falls at Dartmouth, 58-54

HANOVER, N.H. – Brown women's basketball lost a close battle to Dartmouth, 58-54 on Saturday (Feb. 5). Isabella Mauricio led the Bears with 13 points.
In a game where neither team led by more than six, featured 12 lead changes and seven ties, the Bears came up short in their bid for their first Ivy League win of the season.
Mauricio was the lone Bear in double-figures. Charlotte Jewell was second on the team with nine points and Grace Kirk ended the game with eight points. Amanda Latkany had seven points and both Mya Murray and Kyla Jones had six points.
The Bears outshot Dartmouth 41% to 33% but the Big Green finished the game with and advantage of 20-4 on the offensive glass. The advantage allowed Dartmouth to take 20 more shots than Brown and hold a 16-4 advantage in second-chance points.
Brown's longest scoring run in the game came during the middle of the first quarter with Latkany hitting two free throws and Kirk hitting her first three of the game to put Brown up 11-7. The Bears largest lead of the game came on another 5-0 run later in the quarter with a layup by Jones and a three by Maddie Mullin. Dartmouth responded with two threes in the last 30 seconds of the quarter to lead by one after the first.
The Bears held the lead for the majority of the second quarter, twice going up by four, before Dartmouth took its first lead of the quarter on a jumper with eight seconds left. Brown raced down the court and got a jumper from Mauricio to beat the buzzer, putting the Bears up 29-28 at the half.
Dartmouth jumped ahead by three halfway through the third but Kirk responded with another three. Dartmouth came right back with a three to take the lead back and would increase the lead to five with just under two minutes left in the quarter. Brown had a scoreless streak of nearly four minutes to end the third before a layup by Murray to make it a three-point game heading to the fourth quarter.
The teams traded leads early in the fourth quarter before Dartmouth took a three-point lead that was quickly extinguished by a three from Jewell. Mauricio made a free throw to cut Dartmouth's lead to one with just under three minutes left but the Bears committed two turnovers in their next two possessions and were forced to foul, allowing Dartmouth to push its lead to six.
Mauricio hit a three with 29 seconds left to make it a three-point game but three free throws for the Big Green pushed the lead back to six with 14 seconds left. Mauricio hit another three but Dartmouth iced the game with a free throw.
