Men's Lacrosse Holds Off Vermont at Stevenson-Pincince
2/26/2022 3:20:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown Bears (2-1, 0-0 Ivy League) scored the first five goals of the afternoon and held off a fourth quarter charge from the Vermont Catamounts (1-3, 0-0 AE) to take a 12-11 home win Saturday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
"In terms of the half differential, that's a good team that's well-coached, and sincerely we have a ton of respect for them," said head coach Mike Daly. "We actually thought the second half was more indicative of what we expected out of them. They're a well-coached, athletic, tough team that reached the NCAA Tournament last year with a lot of pieces back. I thought our guys hung in there and showed some good poise to finish that game and learn some of the lessons from Wednesday that we were pretty disappointed in."
Brown jumped from the gates offensively, scoring five consecutive goals in the first quarter as Nolen Rockefeller, Brian Antonelli, Darian Cook, and Devon McLane (2) scored.
The Cats ended the Bears' scoring run as senior Thomas McConvey, a 2022 Tewaaraton Award Watch List nominee, scored with 1.4 seconds on the clock.
Cook and Trevor Yeboah-Kodie tallied goals early in the second quarter to push Brown's lead to 7-1 with McLane and Cook picking up the respective assists.
From there, Vermont settled into the game as two goals from Michael McCormack and a third from Brock Haley cut Brown's lead to 7-4 with 4:08 remaining in the half.
Connor Theriault (13 saves) made a big save on Liam Limoges in tight, who entered the game as UVM's leading scorer, with three minutes left in the half to preserve Brown's three-goal lead.
The Catamounts forced a Brown turnover with 35 seconds remaining and pushed the pace to further cut into Brown's lead before the break. However, Cook intercepted a long Catamount pass and found a streaking McLane for his third goal of the game with 22 seconds on the clock to give the Bears an 8-4 lead at the break.
Vermont's offense began to find a rhythm in the third quarter and held a 10-5 edge in shots on goal in the frame. Theriault kept the Bears ahead with seven saves in the quarter while UVM goalie Ryan Cornell (9 saves) only made one save in the frame as the Bears took a 12-7 lead into the final quarter.
The Cats continued to press offensively in the fourth quarter and cut Brown's lead to 12-9 with goals from McConvey and Haley in the first five minutes. After nearly nine minutes of scoreless play, Vermont made it a two-goal game as McConvey scored his third of the game with 1:31 remaining.
After trading turnovers, Limoges cut Brown's lead to one, burying a feed from Griffin Fenech with 38 seconds remaining.
Matthew Gunty won the most important faceoff of the game and Yeboah-Kodie scooped the ground ball and the Bears ran the rest of the clock out for the home victory.
