CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 10th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels (3-1, 0-0 ACC) held off the Brown Bears (1-1, 0-0 Ivy League) with a 14-11 home win Wednesday afternoon at Dorrance Field.
Devon McLane led the Bears offensively with three goals and two assists. Darian Cook finished the afternoon with two goals and two assists.
"I'm just really disappointed for our team," said head coach Mike Daly. "We will learn from it and find ways to coach better and put our team in better positions. I thought our team played hard and our coaching staff will continue to work to find the right combinations and buttons to press."
The Tar Heels jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter with goals from Cole Herbert, Nicky Solomon, and Ryan O'Connell.
From there, McLane and UNC's Lance Tillman traded goals before three straight Bear goals to finish the quarter brought the score to a 4-4 tie. McLane, Cook, and George Grell scored on Brown's run to even the game.
Chris Gray scored his first goal of the game early in the second quarter before goals from Brian Antonelli and Cook gave the Bears their first lead of the game with 10:18 remaining in the half.
Fitting the theme of the back-and-forth contest, the Tar Heels struck twice to take a 7-6 lead before Colby Gendron scored the final goal of the half to send the teams into the break tied at 7-7.
Solomon scored his second of the game to open the second half, but Ryan Aughavin quickly responded with consecutive goals to put the Bears back in the lead at 9-8. Herbert and Gray scored before the third quarter to give UNC a 10-9 lead heading into the fourth.
McLane and Topher Bligh scored 21 seconds apart to turn a two-goal deficit into the tied game with less than 10 minutes to play. Bligh's goal came in transition off a quick outlet pass from Luke Gaydos.
Brown sophomore Connor Theriault (10 saves) and UNC sophomore Collin Krieg (17 saves) traded huge saves halfway through the fourth to keep the game tied.
UNC struck twice on man-up chances in the final five minutes of the game to pull away from the Bears as Herbert scored his third and fourth goals of the game. Jacob Kelly added another in the final minute to make it 14-11.
