Hunter Adrian Defeats All-American for Seventh Place at Midlands

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - Sophomore Hunter Adrian of the Brown wrestling team took down All-American Taylor Lamont of Wisconsin (Dec. 3-2) to finish seventh overall at 133 pounds at the Midlands Championships, which took place on Thursday and Friday at NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.

Adrian won two matches in the championship bracket with a pin (2:40) over Marlon Yarbrough of Virginia and a 3-2 decision against Marcel Lopez, who was competing unattached, before falling to Northwestern's Chris Cannon (Dec. 3-2). In the consolation bracket, Adrian first beat Sean Pierson of Princeton (Dec. 4-2) and was defeated by Joe Heilman of Rutgers (Dec. 5-3) to set up the eventual win in the seventh-place match.

"It felt very rewarding," Adrian said. "When you have trust in your training and are backed by an amazing coaching staff it takes the pressure off you and allows you to just focus on having fun competing. Beating an All-American for seventh place feels like a step in the right direction and gives me confidence that I can compete with anyone in the country. I'm looking forward to getting back in the wrestling room and keep improving."

"Hunter took a step forward this weekend, for himself and for the program," Said Head Coach Jordan Leen. "He's earned some quality wins so far this season and has been in tight matches with some of the better guys in the country. It was great to see him break through and beat a returning All-American today and place as such a prestigious tournament."

Coming away with wins as well at Midlands were sophomore Ian Oswalt at 133 pounds, sophomore Blake Saito and senior Ricky Cabanillas at 149 pounds, sophomore Mason Spears at 165 pounds and sophomore Drew Clearie at 174 pounds.
