Men’s and Women’s Track Teams Victorious at Season-Opening Alden Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's and women's track and field programs opened up the season with team victories on Saturday at the 36th Alden Invitational. The Bears were among eight teams competing on both the men's and women's sides in the first meet of the 2022-23 indoor season.
The Brown men totaled 133 team points to finish seven points ahead of second place URI. The women's team totaled 192 points, finishing well ahead of second place UMass (116).
Junior John McNeil won both the high jump and long jump on the men's side, while senior Altan Mitchell earned two podium finishes with a victory in the triple jump and third place finish in the long jump. All told, then men had 10 athletes/relay teams finish in the top three on the day.
Junior Lauren Yeboah-Kodie won titles in the triple jump and 60-meter hurdles, and junior Chiamaka Odenigbo took second in the triple jump and third in the hurdles to highlight 16 podium finishes for the women's team.
SPRINTS
Junior Marcus Gillespie took home the gold in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.27 seconds, besting his previous personal record by 0.11 seconds.
Sophomore Daniel Sarisky qualified for the finals of the 60 meters, where he placed fifth with a time of 7.02 seconds.
In the 300 meters, sophomore Joshua Lim took home the bronze with a third place finish of 35.59 seconds, followed by junior Zach Love (35.95) in fourth and Sarisky (35.98) in fifth, all setting new PRs in the event.
For the women, junior Emma Gallant took runner-up in the 300 meters in 41.41 to set a new PR. Freshman Jenna Lowrey also scored team points in fifth place overall in 42.28. In the 500 meters, freshman Julia Schriefer also picked up team points with her time of 1:21.35.
Brown's women also earned three of the top four spots in the 60m hurdles, led by Yeboah-Kodie in first place, Odenigbo in third (9.06), and Brooke Ury (9.19) in fourth.
MID-DISTANCE/DISTANCE
Four Bears scored points in the women's 1,000 meters, with junior Isa Stronski and freshman Olivia Takla taking the top two spots with Stronski winning the individual title in 3:01.28, and Takla right behind in second in 3:02.16. Senior Sarah Reichheld finished fourth, and Maxine Montoya took sixth place, narrowly missing a PR in 3:12.61.
Lily Harding rounded out the scoring in eighth place in the mile in 5:23.94.
In the 3,000 meters, senior Emily Moini took silver in 10:25.01, followed by Tevah Gevelber (10:30.28) in third place and Grace Dorantes (10:39.44) PR-ing in fourth place.
On the men's side, sophomore Henry Wood took fifth place in the 1,000m at 2:35.53. Junior Naveen Sharma placed eighth in the mile, earning three points for his time of 4:26.59.
The Bears also had three runners score points in the 3,000 meters, led by Jesse Edelstein in third place in 8:42.98, a new personal-best by nearly 19 seconds. Senior Geordie Young (8:59.46) also scored in the 3K in ninth place.
RELAYS
Brown took home second place in the men's 4x400m relay, finishing just four hundredths of a second behind the lead after a late push by Bryant down the stretch, with Sarisky, Love, Lim and Jack Kelley finishing in 3:24.03.
The women were led in the relays by the quartet of Mya Collins, Ury, Iris Wang and Gallant who finished fourth in 4:05.65. Brown also got points from the team of Schriefer, Juli Gonzalez, Takla and Danna Ofek.
JUMPS
The Bears finished with a clean sweep in the men's long jump with all eight jumpers taking the top eight spots in the field of 31 competitors to earn all 39 points. McNeil led the way for Brown at 7.30 meters, followed by Love at 7.17 meters, and Mitchell in third place at 7.03m. Joseph Oduro (7.00m), JonCarlo Migaly (6.97m), Sam Hurcomb (6.91m), Frank Monahan-Morang (6.83) and Sidarth Raman (6.73m) all scored for Brown.
The Bears took home big points in the triple jump as well with Mitchell leading the way at 14.61m, followed by Oduro at 14.30m who made his collegiate debut by leaping 14.30m, and Raman (14.21m) following right behind in fourth place.
Brown totaled 15 points in the high jump courtesy of McNeil and Raman, both of whom landed on the podium. McNeil took home first place in the event after clearing 2.07 meters on his first attempt, and Raman tied for third by clearing 1.97m.
The women's high jump had two Bears atop the leaderboard, with freshman Nene Mokonchu and sophomore Rudecia Bernard both setting PRs by clearing 1.71 meters, with Mokonchu taking the victory in her collegiate debut by clearing the bar on her first attempt, and Bernard taking second place after clearing on her second attempt.
The long jump had two more Bears on the podium with sophomore Jada Joseph (5.80m) and Zoe Tsoukas (PR-5.53m) finishing first and third, respectively.
Brown dominated the triple jump by claiming five of the top six spots with Yeboah-Kodie (12.46m) in first place, followed by Odenigbo (2nd/12.16m), Joseph (4th/11.81m), Daryn Davis (5th/11.45m) and Makaya Fofana (6th/11.39m).
THROWS
Freshman Zoe Carter-Konate made her collegiate debut by leading a Brown sweep of the podium in the weight throw, leading the way at 16.07 meters, followed by Nicolette Ducharme (15.35m) in second and Chidinma Agbasi (15.35m) in third, with all three setting new PRs. Sophomore Mackenzie Palinski also scored points with her throw of 15.08 meters.
Junior Kendra Ezeama dominated the field in the shot put, finishing at 14.46 meters, one centimeter shy of her PR and a full 1.16 meters ahead of second place. Carter-Konate took seventh place at 11.76m.
In the men's shot put, sophomore Ronan Folan set a new PR by seven centimeters at 14.40m to finish seventh overall, and freshman Liam Capozza (14.09m) scored in eighth place of the weight throw.
Brown will return to action this coming Friday, December 9 at the URI Multi Meet, and will also be represented at the Beacon Invite next Saturday December 10.
